I've actually been looking forward to staying in such an old house and was not disappointed by the building. It is indeed a beautiful house. We've stayed in a double room which was clean and spaceous. Unfortunately the kitchen ruins the whole good impression. The hostel was booked out and the oven on the first floor was out of order.... Lovely hostel in a vintage building oozing character. A busy hub of backpackers a 10min walk from the city centre. Nice and clean rooms (we paid 60 for a private double with shared bathroom). The cons - expect queues on the 2 washing machines 2 cooking hobs and limited number of showers (2 out of 3 were out of action... More

I booked into this place recommended by its sister hostel in Hobart (central city backpackers) which was great. The Arthouse, however, was not so great. First of all I had made a booking for a mixed room with the quoted price of $21 a night. When I arrived, they told me all the beds were gone except for a bed... More

Two friends recommended this place to me.. which is weird! There obviously isn't much choice in Launceston. My dad and I arrived at about 2pm (check in time), and I was starving.. and the kitchen was CLOSED for cleaning.. hrmm.. a very annoying time.. The single private room was ok.. lots of echo and paper thin walls - I could... More

I was arranged to stay in an eight-bed room in the hostel for one night while in a tour. It was a mixed dorm but I was the only female in the room. The mattress was quite comfy but the bunk bed was quite shaky that you can feel it shake when the other one move. I could still hear... More

Stayed here for two nights while on tours Tasmania! Paid the extra for a private room but wasn't told it was not en suite! Shared bathrooms were disgusting especially the unisex showers that smelled of urine and had flies! Reception hours are pretty bad we arrived out 10pm and reception was closed! Our keys were just left on the counter... More

An old place with plenty of character. Comfortable, clean rooms and very good bathrooms. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The same can't be said for some of the guests, but that is no fault of the hostel, merely an observation on how inconsiderate some people can be. We found it difficult to rate this place because we rarely... More

I write this as an older person, but we are important too. The person on the counter was Josie and there was a plus right away. Happy smile, helpful and efficient, Josie was very good, I can't really say the same for the others. The rooms were clean and bathrooms very good. The big drawback for me was the noise.... More

A charming, unique, comfortable, clean hostel in an amazing building. Good facilities, a garden at the rear, and a great deal of serenity on the comfortable balcony sofas. Clean white rooms with light and air, friendly helpful staff, and just across the river from the CBD. I love this place, and want to go back, just to chill out for... More

If you have a thing for anonymous hostels, surrounded by precocious Europeans at various stages of intoxication, the relatively sober of whom remain transfixed to facebook on their laptops, transported from home for their Australian "adventure," then head straight for the Arthouse hostel. There is absolutely nothing about this pretentiously-titled accommodation which feels remotely authentic. It is functional at best... More
