Some friends at theirs about thirty of them, assumed the magnificent task of moving a 1936 convent from its original location to the town of Te Anau, and then adapting it to what is nowadays the Te Anau Lodge. Matt, his wife and his sister, are the hosts in this 4 star plus accommodation. Cheerful and always available, they have... more

The Te Anau lodge is a beautifully-preserved former convent, now set up as a guest house with 6 comfortable rooms. There's a great deal to recommend here - the original architecture and authentic furnishings, the peace and quiet of the area, the comfort and amenities of the property. But the owners (Matt and Chloe) are really the stars here, managing... more

We stayed at the Lodge as one stop on a two-week trip through the South Island and it was the nicest place we stayed. The setting is lovely, the owners are extremely helpful, and the rooms quite comfortable. The library is a very relaxing place to hang out. And the shower - always a telling detail after a long day... more

We were very impressed with this beautiful B&B. The lodge, actually a convent school in another life, is large with expansive grounds and amazing views of the mountains and lake. Our room upstairs was nicely appointed with a modern bathroon and views to die for from our corner windows. There is an upstairs lounge for guests that provides a comfortable... more

On our 4 week trip through New Zealand Te Anau Lodge was our favourite place we stayed by far. It is a beautiful old building (it used to be a convent) with lovely rooms and furnishings. There is a great library/sitting room with a fantastic collection of books and coffee and cake. The library had stunning views of the lake... more

This was definitely the best place we stayed during our 5 weeks in New Zealand. OK it is not cheap, but it is good value and is a house with lots of history and atmosphere. As we were the only guests Matt and Chloe made sure that we didn't feel lonely! The breakfast was incredibly fresh and good, lots of... more

Te Anau Lodge was a real surprise find for us. We hadn't booked accommodation in Te Anau and found the Lodge in a guidebook and turned up quite late in the evening unannounced. Matt and Chloe welcomed us in as though they had been expecting us and gave us a beautiful room on the top floor with a spa bath... more

On a 2 week trip around NZ this was the most expensive accommodation we booked (including 4 star hotels) but reading the rave reviews we thought it may be worth it. However, we found it a tad disappointing. The lounge and dining room are nicely presented, as others have noted. Matt was amiable and obliging enough, although Chloe never appeared... more

Good Morning firstly... we must say we are really sorry that you have had a negative experience at our Lodge. We work extremely hard in a an attempt to ensure that all of our guests have a good time here and get to share in what we think is a pretty special place and it is extremely disappointing to know...

There is very little one can say about Te Anau Lodge that hasn't been said before. We were in New Zealand for a month and it was definitely our best B & B. Nothing is too much trouble for Matt & Chloe. They are excellent hosts and have a knack of making you feel special. I have attached some photographs... more

This is a great place to stay. I don't know whose idea it was to move the entire convent 100 kms (dismantled into only 4 pieces), and convert it to a B+B but it is charmingly and eccentrically successful. Its physically very beautiful, the location is great, but best of all, the service is lovely. Attentive without being intrusive, and... more
