Don't let the drive out put you off; like everything the best things take time. Stayed three nights as part of a driving tour of the South Island and what a highlight. Wonderful lodge, great hosts. I saw seals frolicking in the sea from the deck every day. Sign up for the penguin tour and take the personal chef option.... More

Among the best places I stayed at during my six week vacation in New Zealand. There is always something exciting and captivating driving along a windy gravel road going nowhere and suddenly you enter a bit of paradise which describes Kaimata perfectly. Kyle and Rachel have chosen this location wisely its such a wonderful place to unwind you have no... More

The Kaimata Retreat was the first experience we had in our three weeks on the south island of New Zealand. It was definitely a standout. Everything about the retreat was amazing. The lodge itself is just beautiful. The views, overlooking the sea. The tranquility of the Otago Peninsula. The sheep, the birds, the sea lions, the penquins. Our wonderful hosts... More

The Kaimata Retreat, and our two days on the Otago peninsula, were the highlights of our trip to NZ’s South Island. The peninsula itself is a stunning place -- full of unexpected, beautiful vistas and teeming with birds and wildlife. It’s close to Dunedin (a large city) but feels wonderfully remote. Kaimata retreat is the perfect place from which to... More

This is the most amazing place, a beautiful lodge overlooking an inlet from the sea where you can see a wide range of wildlife including seals and spoonbills. There are three comfortable bedrooms, two with picture windows overlooking the sea. We had the dual aspect corner room with its own patio area, allowing us to make the most of the... More

We stayed at Kaimata Retreat for an all too short 2 nights. Kaimata is located in an isolated section of the Otago Peninsula, out toward Cape Saunders. You really feel like you are "away from it all" with sheep grazing on the adjacent hillside, water fowl and sea lions in the inlet below, and the resident peafowl and chick strutting... More

We spent two nights here in February 2012. The situation is absolutely breathtaking. It is some way out of Dunedin via some quite narrow roads but once you get there it is total peace. Kaimata looks out over an inlet of the sea and it was a joy to sit there with a glass of wine in your hand and... More

This was undoubtedly the best stay of our trip to `New Zealand. The location was perfect for peace and for wild life spotting. Whilst eating breakfast you could see the heads of sea lions bobbing up and down in the inlet. A trip to see penguins and fur seals as recommended by the very helpful hosts Kyle and Rachel was... An inspiring location with a sensational construction from trees on the site by the owner, Kyle. Nature is on the doorstep with great viewing of fur seals, sea lions and yellow eyed penguins. Excellent local produce cooked by private chef Scott was tremendous every breakfast and dinner. Only 3 rooms so it's very personal and feels just like your own... More

What an excellent experience with views and hospitality to make a perfect stay. The hospitable hosts Kyle and Rachel could not do enough and the lodge exceeded expectations. As to the food, we elected to eat in both nights and Scott, their chef, did us proud - an option well worth taking.
