We stayed at Rowenas at the start of February, for the rugby 7s weekend. We stayed in a campervan in the carpark and had a cheap rate accordingly (prices were fair) Half the rooms seemed to be permanently occupied by really dodgy people. All toilets and showers are unisex and we had toiletries stolen from the shower rooms and laundry... More

I stayed at this place in a tent outback, it was priced as expensive as nice holiday parks but was not. very value for money. The place was not cleaned once on our three hour stay, filthy mostly. The shower rooms and toilets appeared to be never cleaned, and not stocked with toilet paper or soap, Four pans for about... More

What a hell hole. I've been travelling for two months around NZ and this was the worst backpackers I've been too. It was dirty, the windows didn't close properly, the room stank, the kitchen floor was wet, rubbish bins over flowing, out of 10 pots in the kitchen only 2 had handles. The bathrooms were absolutely filthy and the taps... More

By far the worst experience we have had in NZ! We booked in and spoke with the slightly arrogant manager who snatched the money from my hands... were suprised to pay good money for a "campsite" and find out it was in a dodgey carpark with no security. The lodge was full of drunk what appeared to be homeless people... More

We didn't pay for a room here but used our van which a lot seem to do! The place was terrible though, the old guy who seemingly ran it was rude, he sold us some Internet usage which was useless and the place could have done with a good clean! The kitchen area shut at 10pm... No questions! The rules... More

I stayed a few days at Rowena's. It was cheap and not really that far from Downtown. It took me only 15 min to walk down to where Te papa, New World's Supermarket, and the other backpackers were. It had a shared kitchen, so it was good (and cheaper) to be able to cook. It was REALLY quiet. No traffic... More

We stayed here as everywhere else was fully booked. Luckily we didnt pay very much compared to other hostels. Worst night sleep, constant howling noise from the wind, no hot water in showers, beds covered in hairs, very creepy hotel!!!

We stayed here for 2 nights in April '12 and the 2 men who work there/run it are the rudest people I have come across in an otherwise friendly country. When I went in to enquire about parking our camper van there firstly the man looked me up and down with a disgusted look on his face which made me... More

Unbelievably bad place to stay. We stayed there for a bit, but would never do it again. Reception was rude. Your food was never safe in the frig. Management made promises they didn't keep. Our room smelled. They must never wash the pillows. The kitchen is inadequate and lots of burners don't work. There are no ovens. Cleaners are good,... More

I don't think I can really add anything more than what the others have said. I stayed there in july/august 2009 and it appears to have gotten worse. Crack house? Yes! Drunken all night sing songs. Yes! Murrsy the miserable manager. Two stolen mobile phones! Urination on the floor by some bloke whose psrole officer was giving him accomadation vouchers... More
