Most people travelling in NZ need to use the inter islander ferry, particularly if one is in a motor home. There are not a lot of choices in Wellington if you want to have a look around the city and find a spot close to the ferry. The best i could find was the Capital Gateway Motor Inn. By night... more
This hotel is fine and is most useful to tourist with car planning on crossing to Picton with car. more
This is a modern, clean property within close distance to the Wellington ferries. Nice restaurant attached. It was wonderful to walk into the room after a rainy day drive. Very nice ambience. more

We spent two nights in the Capital Gateway before sailing to the South Island. Found it quite inpersonal with very little contact from the owners - some may like this however.
