We stayed in the Warden's room, which was clean and just big enough for a double bed and nightstand. Bathrooms were a litlte walk from the room and on the dingy side, but what can you expect, it's prison! Phoned up when we arrived in Napier and met promptly by the coach. We stayed in the Penthouse - so named as we had a toilet and cold water sink ensuite! Separate shower and toilet blocks for all. A great experience, expecially as the Guided Tour of the Prison was so good. So glad we stayed here whilst at Hawkes... more

... if you get up late; you may encounter a tour of the place when you emerge from your cell/bunk room! My sleepy partner emerged to a group of tourists with cameras taking photos outside our room!! Napier Prison Backpackers is the most unique hostel stay in NZ, which coupled with fantastic owners, awesome sunrises over the pacific, the sound of the ocean crashing on the beach, quiet, lots of outside space ( a real boon after the barely available outside feel of city hostels) and constant improvements, makes this one of the best value for money... more

Cold and still very basic for NZ Standards.The Approach road is somewhat steep and at night very very dark. You could quite easily miss it. I had a car and still found it quite difficult to locate. I wouldn't want to be walking around late at night trying to find it.Still needs ALOT of work doing to it before it... more
