We have just returned from a two week trip to Italy. Wonderful trip and fabulous hotels with the exception of Plaza Hotel in Varese. We booked for the night before arrival so that we could go right to sleep for a few hours to recover from the flight from the US. Asked for a quiet room. What we got: a room near the recycle area where we only heard smashing glass; the maids were banging their mops of the iron railing on the back of the hotel so that we could have no sleep whatsoever. Hotel was pretty dirty although our room was OK. The man at the desk was pretty cranky and did not make us feel welcome. We asked for some reduction in the first night room charge but he basically said "too bad" about the noise. I would never stay here again. There is sure to be better hotels. The back side of the property looked like a slum.
