Stayed here for one night, as my husband had previously stayed after a work conference in Darlington....he knew I'd be impressed with this place :) He wasn't wrong! It's in a beautiful setting, with a riverside walk right behind the hotel. The food was lovely; we ate an evening meal and breakfast. Both very very good quality. The room was... More

The George is a delightful, very English, hotel, very atmospheric, full of knooks and crannies, one of them housing its famous Grandfather clock. We stayed for one night only and were sorry it wasn't longer. Our room (a superior one by chance) was spacious and comfortable and well kitted out; dinner was very good and breakfast excellant; and the bar atmosphere... The inglenook fireplace in the lounge is very special - the largest I have ever seen. The staff, without exception, made us feel very welcome and were most attentive The hotel is in a very picturesque... More

First impression outside the hotel was thoughts of abit old and run down and in need of new red carpet for bride/groom but once inside impressions changed, greeted by friendly staff then checked in and showed to our room, room itself was nothing special even had a broken bed side lamp and broken window handle and paying £130 for room... We arrived at The George on Easter Saturday looking for a table for a birthday lunch after being let down by The Manor House Hotel in Bishop Auckland. Stacey (apologies if I've spelled it wrong!) opened the restaurant for us and provided us with excellent friendly service throughout our meal. The starters, main course and dessert were all beautifully presented... More
