I have recently returned from a 5 night break at the Castro Hotel in the Amoudra region of Crete quite near Heraklion airport. After a disappointing taxi ride from the airport with views of a very run down area we arrived at the hotel. The lady at the desk seemed pleasant but had limited english (fortunately my friend who I... more

I have to start this by wondering if I stayed at the same hotel as some of the recent negative reviews because my experience was nothing like any of them. This was my first time as a solo traveller & so was a bit nervous at first, however from the moment I walked into the Castro I was greeted by... more

June 2009 Myself and my husband were booked for 2 weeks at the Castro hotel, but only managed to stay 1 week and then payed extra to move onto a another resort for the 2nd week. The Castro hotel is situated in the worse resort I have been to in Crete, it is on a busy main road where you... more

If you come to Crete for a couple of days - say, to see the palace in Knossos - Hotel Castro is an excellent choice. Although not located in the centre of Iraklion, it is well connected - the bus for the airport stops just in front of the hotel. For the budget-conscious, it may be a good option for... more

This is a small, family run hotel and restaurant with mid size rooms incorporating a small shower room with sink and toilet. Cleaned daily, bedlinen changed every two days. Its location on the main room is a little noisy, the pool at the back was clean but only got the sun between 12 noon and 6pm. Breakfast at the hotel... more

This hotel was perfect for my trip - a week's escape to discover Crete by car. I wasn't expecting much but the room, pool etc were perfectly clean and functional. The best thing was the Maximus Restauarant. At the last minute I had decided to opt for half-board and it was the best thing I did. The food and service... more

Just returned from a week at the Castro Hotel in Ammoudara just outside Heraklion. The hotel is very good value for money and should be classed as 3 star. The rooms are basically furnished but have all you need - fridge, shower, telly and A/C (at 5 euro per night). Swiming pool area and pool bar at the rear. The... more

We stayed at the Castro Hotel for two weeks on a half board basis during the middle two weeks of August 2008. Our party consisted of my wife and I (we are both late thirties) and our seven year old daughter. We have travelled quite a bit (Greece/Turkey/Canaries/USA/Mexico) and have stayed at some very good hotels - and some poor... more

Spent a week here from the 3rd to the 11th July 2008, we arrived very early in the am (5.00) to be met by a friendly guy at reception who did the blah blah and showed us to our room. Within a few minutes the electricity had tripped and we noted the toilet flush didn't work.....oh no, drama, I hear... more
