At the moment Monte Verde and Melba are together here as one hotel but that has to be changed. Melba has not much to do anymore with Monte Verde although it is the same little complex. Both were owned by 2 brothers, but Monte Verde has for biggest part been taken over by a new owner and he is slowly... More

Melba on left as you go in, Monte Verde right, which has some rooms with nice balconies with sea view, imagine in its heyday very nice, signs of wear now but clean with brilliant white bedding and towels, breakfast room pleasant (same for both hotels) pool small but ok although with a bit of pressure wash to the sunbeds and... The owners - the brothers are very arogant and unbelievably lazy. The one - at the reception - is watching The Simpsons on TV all the time and does not bother about anything. The one - serving breakfests is so slow, that we were laughing wathing him. The reception is not 24 hours as advertised on the website. The breakfeast... More

THE BAD Here are some of the bad points. And this is despite my wife being Potuguese and a fluent speaker. Without a native, I sense things would be even worse. - Staff are very rude. Always. - Breakfast always opened at least 30 mins after advertised. On one occassion when we had a tour booked and needed to be... More

Monte Verde is relatively good value for central Funchal but it is basic - more of a guest house feel than a hotel. The rooms are in a tradional style - dark wood furniture, old fashioned decor etc - and the mattresses are very hard! My room had a sea view (quite distant, looking over roof tops) and was reasonably... More

My partner and I have just returned from a weeK staying at the Monte Verde. We had initially booked to stay at the Vila Comacho, but they were overbooked so they walked us to the Monte Verde and I am glad they did. The owners are from Venezuela and are incredibly helpful. The breakfast is a buffet affair with rolls... More

We stayed for a week at the Monte Verde and found it to be a very good hotel. A fair walk from the main area of Funchal but don't let that put you off. The staff are freindly and helpful and the food is good. For the price very good value. More

We found sleeping difficult on the first night, since the mattress was the hardest we have ever encountered in our fairly extensive travels. The offer of a form of padding sheet made little difference the next ,and difficulty sleeping was compounded by dogs barking late into the night, occasionally through, and from dawn onward. We left after the second night, dispite having... Spent there a week - mother, father and daughter 11 yrs old. - Monte Verde is a very nice place for everybody who does not like big hotels.- Close to the city, close to good and very good restaurants, enjoyed the banana-fields and gardens. Loved the flowers and the friendly staff. - Good parking facilities. Free Internet-Access More
