In an impressive hill top castle with good views but the Pousada is in need of renovation, room size adequate but paint peeling and smelled musty . No lift and no offer of help carrying luggage upstairs , disabled access would appear difficult , restaurant has good views but expensive for quality of food . Setubal itself worth seeing .... More

Setubal has nothing much to recommend it - although you can while many an hour away in the central market if you can bear the frustration of not being able to buy the freshest and most amazing fish you may ever have seen - but the Pousada Sao Filipe is worth a detour. Excellent service makes up for the rather... More

At first sight, Setubal seems to be a rather ugly city – too close to Lisbon to develop a strong profile of its own. Grown on the basis of industrial wealth (production and port), it expanded in the 1960s the results of which are a very, very visible belt around the old centre of the town. Taking a closer look,... We stayed in room 101. All 10x rooms are "cells" with no window for the bedroom, but only a small window on 1. floor, a small room with a sofa. Thus the rooms are quite dark and difficult to get fresh air into, which makes them uncomfortable to sleep in (aircondition is available, but has virtually no effect as it... More

The view is really great, and you are really located into the old castle. Be careful, some rooms have no view and are very dark... Ask for a room with a view. Not because of the view itself (the windows are pretty small actually) but because these rooms are really bigger and get more light. The view is fantastic... from... More

We spent a night at the Pousada on our way from Lisbon airport to the Algarve. The Pousada was very easy to find, thanks to the numerous waysigns. Unlike what you may believe from the official photos, the Hotel does not overlook the open sea, but rather the city of Setubal, including the port and noisy construction sites. Setubal itself... We stayed three nights at this Pousada. The staff is very friendly, especially the clerk at the reception and Luis the Maitre D in the restaurant. The food was great. This is an ancient castle so it is expected that the rooms aren't standard hotel rooms. Our room was on two floors. The only trouble was getting the loggage to... More

This was the first of three poussadas my husband and I visited in Portugal. The most cost effective way to stay at this small inns is to purchase a passport (which comes with a 20% discount on meals). Book your room in advance - space is limited. There are a lot of stairs, but the hotel clerk was nice enough... More

The atmosphere of this place is just fantastic. It's a great place to relax. Enjoy the view from high above the ocean and stroll around in this magnificent fortress. The steps up through the gateway also contribute to the fantastic atmosphere. Staff was extremely friendly and beakfast was good. The only drawback was the first night when we stayed in... More

The idea of staying in a 17th century fortress may seem attractive, but actually doing it is something else. The terrace had a fantastic view of the River Sado, and service at the desk and in the dining room was excellent, but this pousada is in a castle at the end of a very steep road. The entrance to reception... More
