Well, arrived after lovely pictures, good reviews (amazing actually!) And lots of details on booking.com. no star rating given, paid £99 for one night twin room, the pictures speak for themselves. No cleaning, no covid extra cleaning! People on top of each other, filthy, no staff, no 24 hour reception as advertised, not a continental breakfast. Told we couldn't be accomodated for breakfast : come back in 30 minutes " I have 92 guests", the dinig room sat 30, breakfast only available 8-10 , you do the maths. Ques for food, once you got a seat not cleaned, no food left; beg for a cup for tea, no milk, ask milk, no cereal bowl, no spoon...etc . Turns out I've paid £99 for a twin room in a 1 star so what do i expect? Never knew it was 1 star or would not have stayed or paid £99 for the pleasure of 1 night! He took my money before showing me the room, odd i thought but i now I see why - people must see the facilties and refuse to stay! Room fell apart, a bulb fell on my head above bed, a drawer i opened fell apart in my hands and hit my toes (see pics) no cleaning, no reception, no clear fire evacuation instructions - told the manager she just apologised only her and 1 kitchen helper trying to do EVERYTHING also no gloves in food preperation, no aptons. I'm sure we will now have COVID or something else . Awful. £99 wish i had booked something else. Asked for refund, guess! ? Getting ignored! AVOID

My mum and I stayed here for one night when we went to see Strictly Come Dancing at the Hydro. The staff at Mclays Guest House were very helpful and kindly booked us a taxi to the event venue. I would say you get what you pay for, it’s very clean, reasonably sized rooms with good facilities. For the purpose of staying here on a budget and for only one night I would recommend. The only thing my mum and I would say was below average was the breakfast provided as the staff working in the morning seemed uninterested and started clearing everything up even though there was half an hour left of breakfast. By the end we couldn’t even get a drink of water. Other than that, good location and worth a visit.

After a recent stay at McLays guesthouse, there are clear reasons why we will not be returning. Firstly, it states on the website ‘free WiFi’ however this was not the case. No password was given, meaning you have to ask for it at reception and on the third floor the WiFi didn’t work. Having already been to speak to the receptionist and we were only there for one night I decided it was not worth the hassle. The state of the room was appalling, there was a hole in the radiator which cause a puddle on the carpet. The bathroom was very rusted, mainly around the soup dispenser. The shower pan had a yellow tinge and the wallpaper was peeling off. Although it states on the website ‘breakfast menu complimentary to all guests’ this is not the case, we were refused breakfast which would have been the only thing to try and reprieve this hotel. The cost of £9 per person is diabolical for a crusty croissant and congealed milk. You also should put safes in rooms if you are wanting the key returned when leaving the premise. Alternatively use a sign in book of some kind, much cheaper! Overall, this hotel needs a lot of renovation. It was definitely not worth the money paid. The website needs to be updated, it needs a deep clean, the WiFi issue needs resolving and many things (in the room we stayed in) needs replacing! I would say the staff members were helpful, kind and polite, but the actual place was disappointing and disgusting.

Arrived after 30 hours of flying to a filthy room with a mouldy shower and blocked drain with filthy water coming up thru the drain hole. Dusty exhaust. Unvacuumed and dirty carpet. Hole in linen and very hard mattress.

My friend and I have just stayed here for 2 nights. Extremely run down hotel with uneven floors and in desperate need of a complete refurb. We were aware that it was a no frills hotel but were disappointed at how worn out the beds were, how mouldy the shower cubicle was and how drafty the single glazed sash windows were. All this paled into insignificance when we were woken up at 2am by the sound of thudding music coming from a nearby night club..this went on until 4am making it impossible to sleep during this time. When we mentioned this to staff they told us there was a nightclub nearby and it wasn't the hotel's fault.. I was slow on the uptake and it wasnt until the second sleepless night that I wondered why the hotel had even dared to put guests into our room (Room 49).. The breakfast however was really nice.. although my vegetarian friend was limited to beans on toast as their veggie sausages had possibly been cooked with the black pudding and the eggs were not free range.. staff at breakfast were extremely helpful though... If you want a really really basic hotel and don't mind the sound of a thudding bass keeping you awake all night then this could be a cheap city option..if however you like to sleep at night and don't fancy taking your chances on the uneven floorboards then maybe give McClays Guesthouse a miss.

My friend and I stayed here for a night out in the city and it was just what we needed. Cheap, big room, clean - if a little rough and worn around the edges - walking distance to the west end and a cooked breakfast was included. We didn’t want for anything and slept well as it’s so quiet! Would definitely stay again.

We stayed overnight at mclays. It was ok, the carpets and furniture do need changing but it was comfortable. Breakfast was included and it was excellent, they gave you an option of hot breakfast too although there was a great selection of cereals, toast and hot beverages. Plus they had vegetarian sausages which is a bonus! Excellent staff!

In addition to many other reviews avoid the place at all costs, not sure how they are even able to sell the property - Damp Run down Rooms, Beds worn out, toilet bin was full from last guest and couldn’t even stand in the shower the roof was so low!! Disgusting. They also expect you to return your keys to reception every time you leave property (no safes for items in room). Complained to Reception and also Hotel Manager on numerous occasions with no reply. Deeply regretted staying here and wasting my money at such a business, totally unprofessional !

this place is in serious need of a make over, it’s the worse place I’ve ever stayed in, rooms were damp, smelt awful and everything you touched was broken. My friend moved the chair and it fell apart plus there was someone else’s socks behind it (which shows that the rooms are not cleaned properly) one of the beds had a waterproof sheet on it which was stained and broken, shower curtain had mold all down it and round the windows, Asked to be moved as my daughter has severe asthma but was told there was no rooms even though online said you could book a room for that night charging £200 (what a cheek) for the night.
