As in the title is was intended to suggest to friends and relatives they stay here while attending a family wedding in the area (Oct '11) so we went to see what it was like. General appearance left little doubt the place was tired and bit drab although relatively clean, staff seemed pleasant enough and gave us all the info... More

Very disappointing Sunday lunch - food lukewarm and badly prepared, vegetables raw. Dining room was freezing (no heating at all despite the fact it's December; we all had to leave our coats on) and dark. Very variable portion size, presumably depending on whatever they were running out of in the kitchen. Avoid the mince and dumplings like the plague -... More

Stayed there again last night after a day's salmon fishing on The River (North) tyne. Simple accommodastion; great staff and food was great. The Steak & Ale Pie is a 'must'. Staff are very cheery and helpful. Great bar; plenty of locals to offer opinions on fishing. Good price; jumbo breakfast; thermos filled and a hearty 'Cherio' as we left.... More

Rather picturesque from the outside but fairly traditional and tired décor inside. The welcome at the bar was friendly. The bedrooms were reasonable, if again, a bit tired and traditional. The weakest point was the bathroom. A totally ineffective shower over the bath, soap only available via wall mounted packs in odd places, and an overall bare, Spartan feel. Some... More

We were allocated to stay in the bungalow which upon first appearance looked good - however we missed the clue that there was a dehumidifier running and the room did not have central heating .We arrived wet and departed still damp The beds were damp and cold and even with the heaters provided had little effect on the persistent damp... After a days walking the hotel was a welcome site. Old ivy covered olde world, but good hot food, cozy bar, lots of others to chat to, bathroom and loo basic but clean. Road a bit noisy out front but bed comfy and breakfast great. Packed lunch of baguette etc kept me going all day not bad for £6 More

Was really pleased with the size of the rooms for the cost -big comfy beds, with sofa or arm chairs to relax in and loads of hot water for a good bath. Also decent wifi. We ate here too a few times and althought the toasties etc were nice and good value with fries for lunch, the evening meals were... More

First impression is that this is one of the hotels that should have been featured on the TV show "the Hotel Inspector". When we checked in and were about to be shown to our rooms I offered to take my muddy boots off and was told it didn't matter. I could see why - the rooms were tired, threadbare carpets... More

The food was dreadful. 3 of us had a meal in the bar - it took 45 minutes to arrive, the chips were lukewarm and tough, the bread roll had been microwaved, the coleslaw had a skin on it from standing out, the bacon was cold , the chicken was lukewarm, the vegetables like bullets and the roast potatoes were... Classic example of great, British accomodation. The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful, the restaurant food was delicious, with a great menu, the room was large, well decorated and comfortable, and the atmosphere in the bar was great. Happy to recommend and my first choice for our next visit to the area. More
