Just returned from another great weekend in Whitby. This time we stayed at the White horse and Griffin with a groupon voucher, what a deal it was.The accomodation and food ( we only had the breakfast, but after reading the reviews we should have tried the evening meal. ) was excellent. We even had our personal weather forecaster in the waitress who served our... We stayed at The Black Horse and Griffin for 2 nights and would certainly recommend it. The words 'charming' and 'quirky' were very apt. Our room, with twin beds, was enormous and we loved the large sofa - so often you only get one comfy chair in hotels. The food was wonderful - I opted for the full English on... More

Just come back from a short break in Whitby where we stayed in the White Horse and Griffin, it was a Groupon deal which we had booked for just one night, after the breakfast in the morning we were left wishing that we had booked the two night deal. The room that we were allocated overlooked the narrow street and... More

We stayed here using a groupon voucher I bought.. Reading some of the reviews I didn't have the highest of hopes.. However we were very pleasantly surprised.. The hotel is quirky and best described as shabby chic... It's clear to see that the new owners are working hard to bring the hotel up to date and are doing a fab... More

If you're looking for shiny receptions this isn't it! The hotel is along an alleyway, and access a little bit strange. However, rooms were spotless, beds comfy, and staff pleasant and obliging( without being in your face). We only ate breakfast here, but good choice and perfectly cooked and piping hot. The hairdryer provided, is just a dryer, so ladies bring your own... More

Chrisie - Thank you for taking the time to post a very positive review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay and we hope to see you again. ou do raise a couple of good points. When residents arrive the official entrance is through the archway and into the courtyard - the WH&G is a 332 year old coaching... More

Lisa - Thank you for your review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your steak - we are very fortunate both with the quality of to meat we get from our local suppliers and with the skills in the kitchen - some outstanding Chefs. I am sorry about the Scallops for which I have absolutely no explanation. As you may... More

To say I am fussy is an understatement particularly about restaurants. I alway talk about the last memorable meal I had in the Caymen Islands in 2001, that was until Saturday night when we stayed at the White Horse & Griffin. The food was amazing my husband ordered the lamb and I ordered the pork, is was so tasty, I... More

We stayed at the WH&G hotel from Saturday 25th til 27th May 2013, two mature(ish) couples. We stayed in the Wakefull and Mary Hepworth rooms respectively. The Wakefull been a larger King Sized room on 1st floor overlooking the small cobbled street to the front of the property, the other room a further floor up overlooking side alleyway. Both rooms... Kev - Thank you for your comprehensive review – very thorough! I am glad you all enjoyed your stay and meals. I think you all “got the place” and I couldn’t agree more with your comments – lumpy and bumpy with the odd creak or two. At 332 years old the “old fella” has the right to be and is... More

We booked this lovely very old quirky hotel on a deal and were so pleased with our short break. I did read some of the less favourable reviews and generally it's Horses for courses, one mans poison is another's pleasure! And this little Gem suited both me and my husband we loved it. It's in a great location, parking is... More

We would recommend staying at this lovely Hotel. The staff were warm and welcoming. Our room (the provider room) was quaint, full of character and very cosy - as was the rest of the hotel. The location of the hotel was ideal as it was in the heart of Whitby, so we could explore the whole of Whitby and make... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
