I stayed in December 2011. Booked two nights. Left after one night. Shocked by the standards attributed to a so called 4 star hotel. Its no way a 4 star. 2-3 stars at most. Decor from the 70's. Chipped baths, threadbare carpets. Stale smell in the room. The hotel agreed to refund my second nights stay but the booking agency... More

I had stayed here in October 2010 for one night and had no qualms about returning 3rd February 2012. The location is perfect but my stay was not. I was allocated room 301 which was a nightmare - no bedside table which also meant no bedside phone or lamp. No heat in the bathroom and bedroom heat only improved by... More

I stayed here on business and the location was chosen primarily on distance from work and price. It's very well situated and easy to find being right next to the natural history museum. on arrival I was offered a complimentary drink which after an eight hour trip was very welcome, although it probably would have been better for them to... The Gainsborough Hotel is perfectly located within London's inner city for a holiday. It's only minutes walk from the South Kensington tube station. And is literally across the road from The Natural History Museum. We were impressed with the facilities at the hotel. Our room was larger than expected and very comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was also very... More

It was the second time I visited London and this hotel was far better than the other one I stayed for a similar price a few years ago. I was looking for a nice, clean, comfortable and convenient hotel and this was it. About a 2min walk to the South Kensington tube station. I was a bit concerned about the... More

Booked through internet, frontage and reception area tidy enough but then shown to our room…in basement..small scruffy and smelling damp. Complained to receptionist stating I would not have booked if I knew it was a basement room. After some phone calls was allocated a triple family room which had tired decor, very loose squeaky floor boards and poor en-suite. Woken... More

Stayed there 10 Nov 2011. One of the five worst hotels I've ever suffered, having stayed in over 500 around the world. No hot water, lost the prepayment, room was minuscule, etc etc. The AA should be ashamed for awarding this 4*. Left after one night, was charged for at least 2 - still awaiting credit card statement. Booked through late Rooms I had this room for £79.00 room only. Before I arrived I read the reviews and noticed the comments regarding the noise from the club next door and so asked for a room on the top floor, which was what I got. The rooms are very tired, furniture is poor and dishevelled but I did get... More

The basic premise of a hotel is that you can get a good nights rest. Unfortunately this is not the case here. There is a private club next door which operates next door and music can be heard booming out until 6am. I really feel for the staff because all were lovely and courteous, however when at 2am they moved... More

This was a Late Rooms booking and therefore a fraction of the full price - just as well! A brilliant location for our do at the V&A but we were a little nervous when even our London cabbie had never heard of the hotel! Perfectly serviceable and fine for a night but The Gainsborough is a rather tired and tatty... More
