Just had 3 nights at the Griffin. Absolutely brilliant! This is now my favourite pub in the Uk. Great food, great real ale, lovely spacious room and ensuite (-room 3) and great service. Lovely atmosphere too. They have got everything just right. Had a lovely time with my good lady. The walking nearby is superb. Loved Pen-y-Fan and associated peaks.... More

A second stay here, just for one (Friday) night. Arrival after a wet walk was friendly, our room (5) was compact, but comfortable. One aspect I enjoy here is that quality is never sacrificed for convenience - the rooms have fresh coffee and a cafeteriere, two types of tea, and no nasty little pots of UHT milk, instead a jug... Had a night here and thought it was a really cosy place to stay. The staff were friendly and helpful, the beds really comfortable, the room on the small size but it had everything you need. Food was delicious, portions ample but not too big and a very varied menu beautifully presented as well using high quality local ingredients. Breakfast... More

We'd heard great things about the restaurant here and decided to try an overnight stay. The food was excellent, with any 3 courses from the a la carte or set menus included in the d,b & b price of £170. The ambience was super and the menus were interesting. All of the dishes we tried were delicious, with high quality... More

We had a great time from the very friendly welcome right to the farewell. The rooms were very comfortable and beautiful linen and pillows all added to a good night's sleep. The food was delicious with just enough choice to ensure eveyone was happy. It was so well presented that we could not have had a better 30th birthday meal... More

My brother in law suggested a quick road trip to the market town of Hay on Wye for my wife and I and my sister in law one Spring Saturday afternoon. Failing to find an adequate menu in the town I used my iPhone to seek out an alternative. Within a short 15 minute car journey we found the Griffin.... More

This was the second time we had stayed and eaten at the Griffin. I can confidently predict there will be a third. The main reason for going is the restaurant. I am an enthusiast for short menus and reasonably priced wine lists, here we had both. The quality of the food and of the cooking were very high, the service... More

We stayed on the half-board package, room 5 (4-poster room) at £190 per night. The Griffin is easy to spot on the A470 between Hay and Brecon - as other guests have said it is right on the main road but it was quiet on Easter weekend and didn't disturb us. The room was cosy - not tiny but not... More

Having booked two months in advance, we wanted to treat out French friends to a visit to Wales and a stay at the Griffin. In the event, one of us fell ill with a chest infection 48 hours before our planned tri p. As indicated in the small-ish print of the booking contract, cancellation would have cost us 75% of... More

Any criticism of this place can only really go down to fine detail and finishing touches. Our room was smaller than we would have liked, but we knew it wasn't going to be big at the time of booking, so can't complain. The building is old, so plenty of creaking floor boards when guests went past the room late at... More
