My wife wasn't too happy with the two hour gravel road drive from Pital to Laguna del Lagarto Lodge. Her mood changed immediately when we arrived. The location in the middle of primary and secondary rain forest, the nice cabins with private terrace, hammock, and laguna views, the very nice, helpful and knowledgeable staff, good food and the great bird-... We recently stayed at La Laguna and really loved our stay. The staff were extremely accommodating - the catering staff were particularly helpful, friendly and very hard working? the manager Adolfo even took us to his garden to photograph the beautiful birds there? The variety of birds at the Lodge was amazing - including: toucans, Acaris, Parrots, Curassows; night herons,... More

I have been traveling in CR for 21 years; a full-time resident for 7 years. I have always wanted to go to this lodge in hopes of seeing the Great Green Macaw. Without a vehicle or public bus, though, I was never able to make it until this weekend. It is REMOTE but so worth it. I am used to... More

A lodge just in the middle of the rainforest. Need I say more? The place is beatiful, the food was good and diverse (including Yuka, palm hearts salad, rice and beans of course etc.). We really appreciate the thought invested in fixing us vegetarian dishes. The staff was so kind and helpful. The price includes a guided tour in the... More

We´ve been at the Laguna Lagarto Lodge for a week in 2012. It´s a remote spot, situated at a small lagoon with a private rainforest area. The trails in the forest offer every meter another natural highlight, lots of birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles as well as monkeys and other mammals. The food is authentic and good, and the dining area... More

I recently stayed at La Laguna and thoroughly enjoyed my stay, the staff, particularly Aldolpho, the manager were extremely accommodating. They aim to please. The variety of birds was phenomenal, guided or unguided walks into the rainforest was educational. The rooms are tidy, can be a bit muggy on hot/humid days as there is only fans, but eventually it cools... More

this lodge in the rainforest close to the nicaraguan border is a wonderful experience for people who like a quiet place where only animals like aras, tucans and other wonderful birds make noise. you also can meet caymans, frogs, coatis, tarantulas and other animals. this lodge is not a luxury hotel but there is enough comfort and everything is eco-friendly.... I spent five nights at the lodge doing bird watching and hiking in the forest, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If you enjoy watching birds and being in a natural setting, the lodge is a great place to visit. Don't be put off by the reports of bad roads. Most of us who watch birds have traveled on worse roads... More

A long drive along poor roads, with less than helpful signposting. But it is worth the effort. It is in the forest, in a very nice position on a slope overlooking lakes. The bird life is superlative, with toucans galore, parrots and other birds feeding on the bananas put out for them. Good walks in the forest are available. Also... More

Birders must go here! Birding from the restaurant is excellent. A spotting scope is great for birding from here and great photo opportunities abound as the birds (and sometimes coatis) visit the fruit feeders. We hoped for Great Green Macaws, but they weren’t present during our September visit. The large almendro trees were in blossom, not fruiting. When these trees... More
