It's not the easiest of places to get to but certainly well worth the effort. The cottage style rooms at the back are well furnished and full of character. The bar and restaurant are just what you would like from an olde English pub. The food is good with a decent size menu and reasonably priced.. The staff are friendly...

Just back from a mid week break at the Durham Ox. We stayed in the Green cottage and we took our dog which was ideal. Lots of great walks on the doorstep. All of the staff are very friendly and polite and take the time to talk to you and find out where you have come from and if you...

wonderfully warm, cosy interior decor, when we arrived 7.15pm Frid evening the restaurant and bar was busy, we were seated promptly at large round table next to bar. Ordered starter and mains and because they were so good we went on to order dessert and coffee and we weren't disappointed. If you really wanted to push the boat out you...

We visited on a gorgeous March day and had drinks on the terrace behind the pub before enjoying a great meal served in the first floor private dining room.
The traditional dining room sat 10 adults and 3 children in comfort and benefitted from the use of private lounge in the next room.

Thank you for choosing the Durham Ox for your birthday celebration. We are delighted you managed to enjoy some sunshine and drinks outside, before heading up to the Private Dining Room. Hope to see you back here again very soon...and please be sure to bring the sunshine back too!

The quality and presentation of the food was extremely high and the service was faultless. Being vegetarian there wasn't as much choice for me but the mushroom tagliatelle was delicious. I particularly liked the salted bread and olives to start.
I am looking forward to my next visit!

Really glad you enjoyed your visit to The Durham Ox. We have recently introduced a new menu in the pub which includes some new and exciting vegetarian dishes which I'm sure you will enjoy, such as Honey Roasted Figs & Yellison Goats Cheese Salad or Asparagus, Pea & Broadbean Tagliatelle. Hope to see you back here again soon!

We had some very good savoury courses: the pork was excellent and the mussels very good. The puddings are less interesting and the coffee disappointing (too weak and no skimmed milk). The service was efficient and not intrusive. The bar area is very pleasant and has some interesting replicas of mediaeval carved panels. As one other reviewer has remarked we...

Thanks for your comments. We are glad you enjoyed most of your visit to The Durham Ox but sorry the coffee wasn't to your liking this time. We do aim to appeal to both groups and couples alike and have different size tables in order to accommodate both. It is a shame it didn't appeal on this occasion but we...

We stayed here back in October 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed it. We stayed in one of the small cottages which was spotlessly clean and the bed was fantastic - so comfortable. Would love to return someday.

Ate Sunday lunch yesterday. Have eaten here quite a lot. But, standards are dropping. My wife had the roast lamb and she likes it pink but it was the equivalent of a raw steak. Red and bloody. It was not acceptable and we sent it back . The replacement lamb was fine if a little tough. My pheasant was fine....

What a shame the lamb wasn’t cooked to your liking this time. All the lamb we cook here at The Durham Ox is sourced locally and of the finest quality, it is also a shame that our waiter wasn’t able to change your perception of your meal experience. Nonetheless we hope to see you again soon. Best wishes, General Manager
