I have stayed at this hotel several times over the year and respected Senor Alex. So I called them a month in advance and made a reservation. When I showed up, the man who took the call denied that he'd spoken with me and would not even open the door to speak with me. He treated me as a warito.

We have stayed at the Maya Cozumel from 1 to 2 weeks a year for about 16 years, it is an old Mexican style hotel, nothing fancy, a place to sleep and drink a few brews and tell tall tales. It is kept very clean.
As divers we found it quite suited our purposes. We have never had anything stolen...
