We stayed for one night at the end of February 2013 while sea kayaking round the small Isles. We met Rachel as we arrived at the pier. We were heading off to spend two nights at Guirdil bothy in the NW of the island as we did not expect the hostel to be open. However, she told us there would... More

I stayed at Kinloch Castle for one night with my dad in June 2012. It is a ramshackle, run-down old place, but we liked it. It's also your best bet for accommodation on the island if you don't want to camp or stay in a hut. Keep your expectations low: remember it is a hostel rather than a hotel. Although... More

Second trip to this fantastic place. The staff were efficient & friendly and the rooms were clean although sadly run down due to the lack of funding. The food was excellent for 3 courses at £17.50, likewise the breakfast. We got the impression the castle is undergoing a secure, make water tight & lockdown policy due to lack of cash... More

What a pity this place is closing next year! From the first cheery greeting, the tour of the castle, the registration and the settling in, the staff could not have been more helpful, friendly and welcoming. Rachel, Ross, Alison and Abby were just brilliant and despite some scaffolding and builders' debris, the Castle itself was an awesome place. At dinner... More

On our arrival last Monday on Rum, my friend Fiona and I were met with a smiley face (Alison) and a cheery "just pop your bags in the back of the van and we'll see you there!" We asked where the castle was, to which Alison replied "it's just across the bay, you can't miss it" We had a lovely... More

My goodness but this place does inspire people to write at great length. It's a creaky old building, and you get what you pay for. We found the staff friendly, the food satisfactory, the long ranger walk to (try to) see eagles splendid. But it is likely to close as a hostel permanently, it seems, perhaps in 2013, so if... More

We have just returned from a trip to Rum having had to postpone a trip last autumn due to bad weather. We were really looking forward to it - but were disgusted by the customer service (or rather total lack of it) from the hostel's staff. The 'welcome' was non-existent. Disembarking the ferry from Mallaig, we put our bags in... More

This was my second trip to Rum and it did not disappoint. This time we stayed in the oak rooms, fascinating accommodation, despite being a bit tired. The hostel rooms are just as good to stay in. Shame about the builders but the grandeur of the castle shines though. They are very short staffed which has resulted in a couple... More

We had a wonderful time here - all very basic but with heaps of character and a bit odd and off the wall at times. The meals were fine, and it was great also to have the self catering option when we wanted a diy meal. The island is. of course, world class for nature and relaxation, and we had... More

I've been visiting Rum almost every year since I was 3 and the castle has always been a wonderful place to stay. Despite the constantly changing managers, I have never had a bad stay there. Whenever we have visited we have never had to share with strangers and the bath on the top floor is amazing, its really deep. Not... More
