We spent two nights sleeping soundly at the hotel. This is a place to go to renew, connect with nature with out the noise of tv, radio, car sounds etc. The boat ride to the hotel, the delicious broiled walley and wild rice, the staff’s friendliness and help and the rescue after tipping our canoe exceeded all my expectations. It has been on my to do list and at 76 finally went! Be mindful it is simple, rustic and well loved and many others enjoy this scenic secluded spot in Voyageurs National Park!

This is an incredibly unique experience within the NPS and the best way to really experience Voyageurs NP. Voyageurs is a water park with few roads and fewer places for you to access the park without a boat. In fact, the vast majority of the park, 3 of the 4 lakes and entirety of the Kabetogama Peninsula, cannot be accessed from a car. So, if you don't have a boat, one of the only places you can stay is Kettle Falls which is a hotel located on the very end of the Kabetogama Peninsula between Namakan Lake and Rainy Lake. For over a hundred years is has served as a lodging for visitors, loggers, bootleggers and hundreds of National Park guest. This is an experience; it is not luxury lodging. It is camp style lodging with common restroom over a cozy lobby and boarding house dining room. There is a nice, covered porch and the local bar for the park. It is nicer than a tent, but without internet or TV, it is oddity more like the early history of the park where you engaged total strangers in face to face conversation. Again Kettle Falls is not the destination but the experience, and it is one you cannot get anywhere else. One of the great things about Kettle Falls is the stay gets you a boat ride to see the park. Ok, it is a $45 charge, but with a room at $70, I preferred to look at it as a normal hotel room with a boat ride into the park included. On that ride we saw several bald eagles which was so cool. As the electronic entertainment amenities are low, this place is made to get outdoors with hiking, kayaks and boat rentals and more. Unfortunately, the day of my visit was steady rain so I did not get to take the kayak out, but I did some hiking to the dam and see the spot where you can look south into Canada from the US. The last part of traditional entertainment of the hotel is the bar for people all around the park to come to and it is a bar you will want to see. The original foundation was not on stable ground, so the porch and bar floor began to sink, so much that there is a visible and pronounce lien in the building. When the NPS stabilized the building, they kept the slope in the bar and porch, so you can still experience this. The best part is the pool table that rises above the floor on one side to keep it level, adding to the uniqueness of this visit. Again for me this is all about the experience and while my experience did not have the best weather, it did not stop me from enjoying this stay greatly.

Parked my car at Ash River Visitor Center and was picked up by Craig in the hotel boat - a $45 round trip. The hotel was simple but clean and comfortable. The shared bath was also very clean. There were only two rooms being used at the hotel the nights I was there - I would think the three available bathrooms would be enough if all the hotel rooms were in use. Ate three meals at the hotel. The fresh catch - Walleye - was excellent. The only reason I didn't give this five stars was that during the day and into the night - till 11:00 pm or so -- every person who is camping on an island or renting a houseboat comes to the hotel for a drink at the bar. I didn't see anything about this in the literature I read. I woke up from a nap by barking dogs and went downstairs to find 50 people in the bar and on the porch. It was fine except that 20 of these people stayed for hours and became louder and louder as they became more intoxicated. It was impossible to relax. Walking outside was not possible because of mosquitos due to recent flooding. I'm not sure if this would be a problem later in the season. I stayed two nights and hired Craig for a boat ride on the second day. The park is stunning. It is definitely worth the drive to northern Minnesota to experience.

Simple dining room, packed with diners. The bar was hopping! I loved my wild rice soup, the crunchy buttery toast with the steak. I do wish that the open sandwich is served with a slice of tomato and lettuce to make it look more appetizing. My husband was happy with his French Dip sandwich with chips.

We rented a boat and were very excited about trekking to the other side of the lake to see the historic inn and have lunch. The lake was spectacular but the inn was not. We got there around 1:00 and the remnants of might have been a breakfast buffet or sandwich station were left out. There were not an servers. Found someone and asked how lunch worked. They said have a seat and someone would help us. No one ever came to our table or several others. A table did have drinks but said they placed their order a long time ago and hadn’t seen anyone. We ended up leaving. Maybe they are short staffed like everyone right now. No plans to ever go back.

Due to historic water levels, the hotel was closed. Nobody from the hotel reached out and let us know our stay was not going to happen. No phone call, no email, nothing. I get the water level was so high they could not open, but seriously no communication to guests with reservations. We were left in a jam and had to scramble to find somewhere else to stay for two nights.

The Kettle Falls Hotel is one of those out of the way places that you gotta go to if you can. The only way in is by boat. And once you're there, you're there. Voyageurs National Park is a water park. We didn't rent any boats and were confined to land. There aren't any real trails into the area from the Hotel. A number of paths leading to various parts of the compound. During the day, the area gets really crowded with people coming in boats from the 'mainland'. After about 5pm or so, it quiets down a bunch and becomes lovely. We enjoyed our dinner and drink on the porch. Our room? So, we had a really, like really really small room. Our room is upstairs with a very narrow steep staircase with tight turns. The room has a double bed, a dresser and a chair. The bathrooms are down the hall. The place has nice wood floors. They brought us from docks in golf carts. There is a long porch along one side. It was a fun experience.

Just returned from a 3 night stay in the hotel over the July 4th weekend and we are already planning our next trip up to Kettle Falls. From the moment we walked into the hotel and were welcomed by Lori as family, we felt at home. The staff worked overtime making our stay comfortable - always ready to cart us to one of two marinas in their little electric golf carts, chat about the history of the area and wildlife, and interested in what we were doing as we explored. We rented kayaks one day and a motorized boat the next day so we got to explore both sides of the lakes. The family style dining, comfortable living room, and bar all made getting to know other guests easy (big hello to our new best friends from Stillwater and Hawaii). Thank you Lori especially, Bruce, Hannah, Thomas, and Sean for making our vacation so easy and enjoyable!

The only way to get to this place is by boat. The hotel offers a shuttle, while locals and fisherman float in by boat. The hotel offers a portage service to either sides of two lakes that surround this area. The place was originally financed by a local Madame in the 1920s which serviced loggers and fishermen alike. Notable guests have included Charles Lindbergh, Ernest Hemingway and Al Capone. Have a drink in the local "tilting" bar or consider a "Pinky" a pink slush concoction fortified with vodka. The front porch is the place to eat, drink and be merry. Also add your dollar to the pile found in each bench. The rooms are basic and bath facilities are shared. They do offer several villas for larger groups. All told would go back just for the peace and quiet.

We only looked into the hotel rooms, we stayed one of the villas - and this review is for that stay. You'll need to schedule a pickup from the hotel water shuttle, to be picked up at Ash River VC. There's lots of boat space and they do take pets - which was awesome. ALL the staff was great - management, marine vessel operators, and kitchen staff. Big shout out to Kevin (kitchen), Craig (boat), Lori (admin) and especially Sean (manager) - they were all fantastic, helpful, friendly, and super customer oriented. The villa was comfortable and spacious enough. Be sure to request a double bed room - as a couple, we got a pair of bunk beds (not optimal, but certainly workable). Rooms had a window A/C - which was very nice. Kitchen villas are worth the extra $$, if you plan to cook at all and not rely on the hotel - and it may be a bit cheaper for you and offers more flexibility than serving times. Each has a shared pier into Rainy Lake and a screened porch and a grill. Easy walk to the hotel/dining hall to eat. Mosquitos were bothersome, but not terrible. Ticks were terrible - especially for the dog. So, come prepared for both possibilities. Can rent canoes, kayaks or power boats and all reasonably affordable. Mornings (with coffee) and evenings (with other beverage) were great on the lake. Really loved this place and the people, just would have liked to have had been able to share a bed with my wife.
