I had 3 great days at Udzungwa forest camp! I arrived by train from Dar es Salaam, that was delayed for 6 hours. But they arranged someone to pick me up in the middle of the night! The staff was great, very friendly and helpful! Apart from the en-suite tents, there is also accommodation that is affordable for backpackers: huts...

Udzungwa Forest is a little-known treasure: go if you get a chance. It has two endemic monkeys (including the red colobus) and many indigenous birds. Hondo Hondo Lodge is right on the edge of the reserve and the staff are extremely friendly - ask and they will try to help. However, the organisation is somewhat shambolic and we did feel...

Hello Kathryn
Glad you loved the Udzungwas - they truly are a remarkable place and offer a unique chance to experience the rainforest which is wonderful. As to your other comments - apologies you felt we were a little "shambolic" - in a rural African location such as this it can be a little difficult to get things running just...

Staying at Hondo Hondo lodge was a lifetime experience because we got to stay in the mi9ddle of the forest. The lodge was fully ecologic and it was as good as staying in a hotel.

First off, it is well worth the long-trip to Hondo Hondo to hike in the Udzungwa mountains. There are so few places in Tanzania where you walk for long distances, that it was a treat to be on foot (albeit with an armed ranger, park guide, etc.). We did the three-day climb of the park's second-highest peak, Mwanihana, and had...

Hello MKirsh - Great that you had such a good time :) Especially glad to hear you enjoyed the insect fun - it is amazing how many species will appear, from the ordinary bugs through the weird and wonderful beetles and massive preying mantises. Hope you can visit us again and maybe even venture into the tented rooms for a...

Udzungwa was one of the highlights of our two weeks in Tanzania, and I would recommend Hondo Hondo as a good place to stay. We stayed in one of the bandas (thatched huts) for $120/night (full board), which is rather like camping in a large tent (i.e., don't come expecting luxury--be ready for some insects and a bit of dirt)....

Hello Malcolm75
So glad you had a good time and that you enhoyed your meals so muxh. it also sounds liek you ahd some great expereinces hiking, wiht leopard as well as monkeys and the rest! Hooray :) The bandas (thatched huts) are indeed fully intended to be a bit like camping in the forest - but as you say...

Magical place. Fantastic setting, very friendly staff and great accomodation at a good price.
I went in December 2011 and stayed for 3 nights. The food was excellent; the full english breakfast is indeed fantastic, and the evening meals were also cooked to a very high standard. For me the only small issue was that the food was all western...

Hello Ceriog
Sounds like you had a good time with us which we are of course happy to hear about. Point taken about the darkness around camp after sunset - we are trying to balance eco-efficiency and power/kerosene use with health and safety! We hear you though and are now looking into installing low-energy LED lighting along the paths to...

The trip out to Hondo Hondo from Mikumi was a hot one. I'd been in the bush for days and was hot, sweaty and dusty. Upon arrival I was handed a cold wet towel. Bliss!! This pretty much set the scene for my entire stay at Hondo Hondo.
The banda i stayed in was well equipped and even had UK...

We spent 2 nights in the tented camp. We visited the Udzungwa Mountain National Park and hiked to the Sonjo waterfall. We had a tour of Mang'ula village on a first communion Sunday when the village was full of celebrations. Our guide knew so much about the local culture, economy and politics in addition to the birds. As he was...
