We spent our final night in Costa Rica at Corteza Amarilla, and it was the perfect finish to a great trip. It is the most unusual hotel we have ever visited. It is completely filled with art and collected objects, lots of it for sale. Many of the displays are whimsical and challenging. I can understand why some people would... more

It's not that this hotel was horrible - it wasn't. But it wasn't great - and compared to the 8 other hotels we visited in Costa Rica, it was the only one that wouldn't merit a return visit. We booked a master suite - at $175 the price was comparable to most of the other rooms we had in CR.... more

The Corteza Amarilla is a true hidden gem among the city that is San Jose Costa Rica. The staff is excellent, food is 5 star for a 3 star price and your lodge is not a hotel room at all but a roomy bungalow with great beds, 500+ thread count sheets, plenty of pillows and ceiling fans that don't squeak.... more

I stayed in many hotels while in Costa Rica and this one was by far the cleanest. The beds were heavenly and the staff was terrific with their service. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for a beachside location but if you're going to be in San Jose for a few nights, this is the place to go. The... more

Although highly recommended to us by friends we were very disappointed by the quality of food in the restaurant. We were greeted with the question "Do you want meat?" which was repeated three times. My partner chose roast chicken which turned out to be as plain and tough as two small pieces of chicken could really be ($20)....and I had... more

We stayed for just one night after arrival to San Jose and it was a great way to start a vacation. The highlights: great customer service, good restaurant and, most of all, a feeling of being in a special place. more

The Corteza Amarilla has a lot of personality! the rooms are very nice and the people and service were outstanding. We had an early flight so our check out was before the restaurant opened. Rafeal had boxed up fruit and bagels for our ride to the airport. That is going beyond what we expected. Absolutely a great place! Steve Romnes more

Our whole family, all 13 of us stayed at the Corteza Amarilla Lodge on two occasions and each visit was special. When you have a group the size of ours it isn't always easy to meet all the needs of everyone. But this staff did an excellent job. The rooms were spacious, the grounds beautiful and the decor was creative... more

I loved this place. The only problem I had is that I didn't get to stay there long enough. The rooms are very nice and the grounds are amazing. The restaurant is wonderful and the menu is fantastic with lots of interesting items to choose from. Raphael, one of the owners, made us feel completely at home. When you stay... more

A uniquely amazing place to stay in San Jose. The rooms are beautiful, the staff is amazing, the restaurant has over the top food & wine. The hot tub is so romantic and the gardens are so tranquil. more
