This is a fantastic castle hotel, with quirky rooms, and excellent food. However, I do think that it is overpriced. We stayed purely for a wedding, but I would not visit again. Our room (Lairds) was pretty small, and had a 4 poster. For over £200 I expected more..... The Castle is a little remote, so if you want to... more

stayed here for a friends wedding and really enjoyed our one night here. Very expensive accommodation for what it is but you are paying for a lovely location. There is a lovely library room to sit and relax with a big cosy fireplace. We stayed in the Lodge and although doesnt great from the outside the room was very cosy... more

The approach to the castle is very impressive, set in extensive undulating grounds with large woodland and a river completing the rural setting. There is also a Falconry centre in the grounds, where the staff is willing to show the birds to you & may even let you hold the birds as well. On entering the interior of the castle,... more

Myself and my boyfriend just got back from a weekend here, we thought the hotel was excellent ! We arrived on Friday the 8th of Jan and departed today, the 11th. We found the hotel staff to be v friendly and helpful, a staff member, Peter, offered and gave us a tour of the castle yesterday afternoon, which was great...... more

Having read so many negative reviews I booked the Hogmanay programme in a themed room with some trepidation. There is no doubt that the place needs a lot of money spent on it to bring it up to scratch. Yet the experience was not unpleasant. The staff were courtious and very helplful. The programme organised for the three nights was quite... more

I am not sure where to start as I have yet to send a letter of complaint to the owners of this Castle Von Essen, re the really poor quality this Hotel affords its guests. Only to say don't bother. more

I should probably qualify the following comments with a couple of points. Firstly, I have never been to a Spa before, and secondly I had benefitted from a very advantageous rate. Our stay was, as such, very much an opportunistic one - a chance to stay in what appeared to be a grand old castle on the outskirts of Edinburgh... more

We visited this hotel for my husbands 60th birthday. We had a hitch with our booking which was sorted out promptly and efficiently. When we arrived at the hotel, the reception staff seemed ok and Angus showed us to our room which was a nice touch. The room itself 'Dalhousie Room' was lovely and very unusual with a long corridor... more

We had a wonderful stay in one of the castle rooms. The staff was very helpful and friendly, great service! We LOVED the Dungeon restaurant. The food was great, but the only complaint was that there was no music. The dining room was eerily quiet as the diners were afraid to raise their voices over a whisper. I guess it... more

Had read all about this hotel and had family stay previously. Paid £125 via Booking.com. Got a castle room for that, wouldn't recommend the lodge, the experience can't be the same. We were a little disappointed with the room - room 15. Door handle needed replacing etc but the main problem was the small size of the room. Guess we... more
