This Inn (Minshiku) is an acceptable place to stay - but it's fair to say that the facilities and lack of contact with staff let it down. The rooms are serviceable but a bit old - but I feel as though they need to at least upgrade the seats in the lounge - vinyl is peeling off due to age.... More

I arrived at Magomechaya on the late afternoon of April 30th wanting to spend a night there and hike to nearby Tsumago the following day. The place is centrally located and the owner's wife speaks English. I can't comment on the food as I ate elsewhere, but the restaurant where the breakfast is served is across the street from the... We stayed here for one night and had excellent service. We do not speak Japanese but had no problem communicating. Our daughter got sick and the staff was very helpful. I can not believe reviewers are comparing this to a hostel. They clearly have not stayed at a typical hostel lately. We enjoyed having a common area and kitchen available.... More

4 of us stayed in Magomechaya for one night. We made reservation over the phone, they speak English pretty well. It was a rainy day and the room was initially pretty cold, it became very warm and cozy when we turned on the small heater. I was impressed at how well it worked, as we had to completely turn it... We stayed at Magomechaya for 3 nights in Jan 2012 and it was cold! the town was blanketed in snow! So our problem was the cold. Despite our room having a good little heater, as there was only one other guest staying there at the time the rest of the place was not being heated so just to go to... More

We felt slightly mis-sold on this 'ryoken' compared to others we stayed at. It has more of a youth hostel feel to it, with communal social areas and a fairly grim-looking kitchen. And similarly ugly communal bathrooms (all of these areas were freezing cold too which, although not unusual in Japanese style accommodation, was more pronounced than our other lodgings).... More

Be careful ! Although the place is ideal for a hike to Tsumago, our tatami-room was infested with (bed?)bugs, and for more than two weeks I have suffered from the bites. For the rest I agree with the comments of others: the price of the room does not justify asking 100 yen for the use of a towel, for dinner... More

We booked this place as we wanted to get a taste of rural Japan during a two week long holiday. The price here was better than anywhere in Tsumago. Overall Magomechaya was good and we found the staff friendly. It is perfectly located for doing the Magome to Tsumago walk which we would very highly recommend. I would echo other... More

We picked Magome guesthouse after seeing the prices for tsumago accommodation. My fiancé and I did the walk to tsumago and back and preferred Magome as there seemed to be more life there, tsumago is pretty but once we had taken photos we were ready to leave. We stayed two nights there which is sufficient time to get there, stay... More

Very dispointed. The guy who received us seems to be "unable" to smile and say any word, even in japanese. Diner is oversized compare to all other places in Japan (not really necessary). No towel in bedroom instead of all other places in Japan, but you can rent one for 100 Yens (ridiculous). Room over a compressor or pump that... More
