Stumptown Coffee Roasters, connected to the lobby of the ultra-hip Ace Hotel, is the Portland, Ore.-based company that roasts beans locally in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and offers excellent espresso or French-press or cold-brewed coffee.

The slim pickings in the pastry department include flaky croissants from Ceci-Cela.

Cafe Grumpy is for the coffee purist: neither location allows laptops and seating isn't particularly comfortable. But the fresh coffee makes up for the lack of atmosphere.

Each cup of single-origin coffee is brewed by hand, using a Clover machine, and the price reflects that. This is the only coffee place I've been to where a drip coff... Moreee can be more expensive than a latte.

But those lattes come with an intricate design in the foam. A "flat white" has less milk than a latte.

Agave syrup makes it easy to sweeten an iced coffee.

The small pastry selection is more of an afterthought. You are here to drink coffee. And maybe read the N.Y. Times. In print, not online.

The Chelsea location is near the Limelight Marketplace, where you can buy clothes, specialty soaps and food in a former church and nightclub.

Joe the Art of Coffee offers pour-overs, individually made cups using a ceramic cone and single-origin beans. But even a less expensive cup of the daily blend is rich and perfectly brewed. If you have your coffee to stay, you can drink it out of a ceramic mug.

Bluebird, a sliver of a storefront, throws open its windows in nice weather, though also you also walk across the street to the park and playground. Tompkins Square Park is seven blocks away or you can just stroll around the East Village.

The coffee shop offers pour-overs, drip coffee and espressos with agave and simple syrup sweetener... Mores.

Blue Bottle only serves pour-overs and espresso drinks, with two non-coffee drinks: hot chocolate and water. The iced coffee is made in the Japanese cold-brew method. You also can help yourself to glasses of ice water.

In this vast space, there is a line of pour-overs and customers waiting.

Locally made Mast Brothers choco... Morelate is also sold here. Blue Bottle, based in Oakland, Calif., sells only organic coffee, brewed in tiny batches so it stays fresh.

Berry Street has a bike lane, so Blue Bottle is a great stop on a biking tour of Brooklyn.
