Although the 7.46 mile race hasn't changed much over the years, the event is probably best known for the tens of thousands of unofficial entrants who walk the route behind the runners, often dressed in costumes, and often in various states of undress and drunkenness.
Total sobriety and suitable attire is highly recommended for our bicycle alternative to the Bay to Breakers which follows a path close to the official route, but adjusted for the best cycle routes.
The journey covers the full length of downtown Market Street from the Ferry Building, navigates 'the wiggle' through suburban streets, and takes the Panhandle bike path all the way to the Golden Gate Park and the Pacific Ocean beyond.
