It is not often that in a small community, the lower elevation mountain with the less exciting views deserves praise, but in this case... more » I think it does. Mounting Hor is significantly easier than Pisgah, thanks to a CCC road that knocks nearly 600 feet off the ascent, which itself is shorter by about 100 feet as well, cutting the elevation gain of the Pisgah hike in half.
The whole experience though is a tightly knit package: very low traffic, lots of well-laid erosion mitigation measures and much less road noise than Pisgah. This trail certainly has a quite a few landmarks and lookouts, though in the fog, I only focused on summiting. Shockingly, summiting took only half an hour, making the total hike less than 50 minutes.
Most of the way up, one is given the option to visit the other lookouts, which will make this 1.9 mile trip a 3.1 mile trip. Well worth it on a clear day, but perhaps not so much if all you are seeing is fog.
Sturdy shoes are great, though as this only took me half an hour, I wouldn't worry too much about footwear choices.
About half a mile south of Lake Willoughby on 5A there is a single lane CCC road and parking lot. Drive up the very well maintained dirt road for 1.7ish miles. There will be a small pullout and just above the pullout and ten feet up the road on the right, but above the road is the trailhead. The sign says "Herbert Hawkes Trail". less «
