JoAnna H's City Tips

  • Getting between the Las Vegas Strip and downtown is best done by taxi or public bus. To get beyond these areas, rent a car or travel with a tour company.
  • While parking on the Strip is free, parking in downtown Las Vegas will cost a few dollars.
  • Though the Las Vegas Strip seems like it should be walkable, it's actually four miles long, so don't plan to do everything in a single day – or even two!
  • If you'll be in town during a holiday season or over a busy convention period, buy tickets and make reservations in advance if possible.
  • While it's appropriate to dress fairly casually in Las Vegas during the day, you should dress up a bit for evening and nighttime activities.
  • Should you decide to take a photo with a street busker, you can't be required to tip but it is strongly encouraged that you do so.

Nothing says Las Vegas extravagance like walking through the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian. They don't construct themed resorts like this anymore, and walking through this part of the property really does feel like wandering the pathways of Venice. Even if you don't plan to do any shopping, watch the gondolas float by, take some photos and enjoy the people watching.

    Tips
    • Look for the placards displayed throughout the Grand Canal Shoppes that provide details on when and where to find the street performers.
    • There are usually events surrounding the Carnival holiday, so the Grand Canal Shoppes may be more crowded, but they're also more colorful and interesting to visit.
    • As the day goes by, the ceiling with its painted clouds gets darker and the street lamps come on in the faux St. Mark's Square.

The world's highest observation offers a view of Las Vegas that can't be found anywhere else. A ride on the High Roller takes 30 minutes to make a full rotation. Enjoy the 360-degree view, which takes in both the Las Vegas Strip and the surrounding desert scenery. A televised commentary provides information about the construction of the observation wheel as it reaches its peak height of 550 feet.

    • Families can ride Saturday mornings for a special price and before other riders get in line.
    • Before or after your ride on the High Roller, walk the length of the adjoining pedestrian mall called The LINQ to check out a variety of stores, attractions and restaurants.
    • There are no bathrooms on board the round pods, so go before you ride.
    • Riding the High Roller during the day and at night are two very different experiences. Ticket prices during the day are much cheaper, however.

No trip to Las Vegas would be complete without a stop at the Bellagio Fountains. The famous fountains dance to a mixed array of music starting in the early afternoon and running until late at night. During the winter months, a variety of holiday songs are shuffled into the mix of Broadway tunes, rock-n-roll hits and pop favorites.

This three-story bar is nestled inside one of the largest chandeliers in the world. Each level of this massive structure has a different theme: The bottom floor is upbeat with a DJ, the second floor is known for its specialty craft cocktails and the very top level is particularly intimate. Regardless of whether you stop for one drink or three, the chandelier is definitely worth seeing.

Downtown Las Vegas has flourished in recent years, and the Downtown Container Park is one of the best things to come out of the development. Made out of shipping containers, this self-contained, family-friendly area has several locally owned retail shops and dining facilities. There is also an outdoor stage where occasional concerts and events are held, and in the middle of the Container Park is a large play area made of repurposed shipping containers. Overall, it is a fun, relaxing place to let the hours pass by.

The famous Fremont Street Experience has attracted visitors to downtown Las Vegas for many years, but the newly unveiled zip line that runs down the spine of the pedestrian zone provides a new way to experience a classic favorite. Held in a permanent circus tent in front of Caesars Palace, Absinthe is part burlesque, part acrobatic performance and completely memorable. Told through the fog of an absinthe stupor, it mixes raunchy comedic pieces with Cirque du Soleil-like feats of balance and flexibility. The intimate nature of the performance space combined with the over-the-top vulgarity at times mean that it's not appropriate for everyone, but those with an open mind will enjoy it.
