Chris O's City Tips

  • Public transport is great in Lisbon. Indeed its trams and funiculars are among the city’s most popular attractions. Get the Lisboa Card for inclusive rides across the system.
  • Keep in mind that Lisbon is a very hilly city. Wear comfortable shoes when hitting the streets.
  • A tip of 10% of your bill is customary at restaurants.
  • As in any big city, it's not a bad idea to keep track of your belongings, especially in crowded and touristy areas.

Yep, it’s an elevator in the middle of the street, and a lovely Neo-Gothic one at that. Lisbon is hilly, and with some help from Santa Justa, its historic center is a little more scenic and a lot easier on the feet to explore.

Don’t be put off by its rather plain-Jane exterior — what’s inside this 16th century convent cum museum is a feast for the eyes! Portugal is famous for its azulejos (blue tiles), and you can find out all about them here at this delightful attraction, which many visitors remember as a highlight of their time in Lisbon.

A marvelous feat of 18th century engineering, the 'Free Waters' Aqueduct (which no longer supplies the city with water) is made of more than 100 arches and spans a length of 36 miles. When they were constructed, the arches were the tallest in the world.

Not so much off the locals’ beaten path perhaps, but for some of the best non-touristic shopping, dining and nightlife in town, the neighborhood of Campo de Ourique can’t be beaten. Mercado is an excellent place to start your discovery of this fun and friendly part of town.

Home to the art collection of Armenian-British businessman Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian (considered to be among the world’s greatest private collectors), this small museum packs a big cultural punch for fans of just about any type of art. The collection’s main draw is its impressive array of antiquity pieces.

Definitely one of the quirkiest places you’ll ever have a cocktail, the Chinese Pavilion is a five-room bar housed in an old grocer, decorated with antique cabinets filled with toys and collectables from World Wars I and II.
