Where to kite, best spots, what to look out for, and more

  • Category: Best of
  • Traveler type: Active/Outdoors, Repeat visitors, Sports buffs, Beachgoers
  • Appeals to: Active/adventure
  • Seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall
  • 1. Kite Beach

The place where kiteboarding was born in Cabarete. Nice flat water on the inside and a shallow reef (particularly upwind) where there are beautiful waves. Watch out for Dominican kids and students...

  • 2. Cabarete Bay

Home to the Professional Kite Riders Association world cup tour each year. Launching begins only downwind from Villa Taina Hotel and please no kiting in the shorebreak. The bay is very wide and choppy on the inside. The reef is not as shallow and there are wonderful waves. Be careful on the downwind side of the bay (just above Kite Beach) as its shallow reef. Give way to all other water users and enjoy!

  • 3. Playa Encuentro

The local surfing beach is great for kiting in the afternoon when the wind picks up. Downwind from Cabarete Bay or Kite Beach, its about 5 miles. This place is for advanced riders only. The reef can be shallow in places and the beach for landing is very narrow. Arrange for a taxi to pick you up before you take off on the downwind trip. Amazing waveriding for those who enjoy that aspect of kiteboarding.

  • 4. La Boca

The mouth of the Yasica River, about 5 miles East (upwind) of Cabarete. Inside the rivermouth the water is flat, but be careful of submerged trees, and do not kite close to the mangroves on the left hand side of the river. The ocean here is very wavey, its a great downwinder from La Boca home to Cabarete.
