Do's and Don'ts

  • Explore locations featured in this Trip List: Gettysburg
  • Category: Perfect weekend
  • Traveler type: Culture, Sightseeing, Active/Outdoors, Never been before
  • Appeals to: Tourists
  • Seasons: Summer, Fall
  • 1. Gettysburg Museum and Cyclorama

This was very cool. The museum is, of course, full of interesting artifacts and information, and the cyclorama mural is both beautiful and moving. I recommend doing this early in your trip to get a handle on the history.

  • 2. Battlefield Tour

This can be done in different ways, including on your own with an audio CD, in your car, on a segway or walking. Even on horseback! But set up a personal tour with a tour guide who drives you around in your car. Although I've only done it this way, I think it's probably the best way. Our guide, Bobby, is also a history teacher. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable, he was interesting, enthusiastic, charismatic, and drove my car safely! We will be asking for him again, but I'm sure all of the guides are great. And, you don't just sit in the car the whole time. They'll get you out at important spots and show you around! Call ahead or just check at the main museum building to set up a time.

  • 3. Ghost Tour

DON'T DO IT. This was a waste of time. I can't even remember which tour company we did, so perhaps it's not fair to say they are ALL bad. It's possible we just had a particularly bad experience. Lucky us, we just happened to get a young tour guide who was new on the job and enjoyed talking more about her personal life than anything. My mom and I were THE only two people who showed up for the tour. Big surprise I guess! We aren't big skeptics OR really into ghost hunting: just in the middle. We thought this would be a really cool experience, but it was the biggest waste of time and money and "cheesier" than expected. Better to just explore this side of Gettysburg on your own maybe?

  • 4. The Soldiers National Cemetery at Gettysburg
The Soldiers National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Really beautiful. A nice walk on a fall day, as well as interesting and moving. Also visit the monument to the Gettysburg Address.

  • 5. Dobbin House Tavern
    Dobbin House Tavern, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

We discovered this on our first night INSTEAD of eating upstairs in the fancier restaurant because we were so hungry and didn't want to wait. Boy am I glad. This place is really neat. Period decor and atmosphere. Good food and drinks. And you can take a mini tour of the house for some history dessert!

  • 6. Adam's County Winery

This was a perfect stop on our way out of town on our last day. We had a cool little tour of the facilities and then enjoyed some wine tasting. Ended up buying several bottles to bring home! The grounds are really beautiful. Even the drive there was quite picturesque. You can also do some wine tasting at their little shop in downtown Gettysburg.
