  • 1. Vauxhall City Farm

    South of the river awaits a sensory farmyard experience. Rural smells and lively animal noises provide a little bit of countryside between the busy streets and high-rise buildings. Vauxhall City Farm is home to horses, sheep, chickens, guinea pigs and other animals. Volunteers run the farm and help is always welcome. Crafty types can try their hand at art classes, spinning, dying or weaving lessons. The city farm also contains a grassy spot for picnicking and a duck pond.

    Spitalfields is not just home to the vibrant market - it is also the location of the nearest city farm to the square mile. This city farm's "adopt-an-animal" scheme is a great way to support the farm - and to find an unusual birthday present for the person who has everything! There is a farm shop selling free range eggs and seasonal vegetables and herbs. Volunteering opportunities include a Young Farmers Club drop-in which is on Saturdays.

    Deen City Farm spreads over five acres of land in the London borough of Merton. It provides a working example of a farm in an urban community. There are a whole family of farm animals to meet along with lovely garden to explore and a full riding school. Kids get the chance to pet some of the smaller creatures. Unusual animals include Milo and Kimby the alpacas and even a snow-white peacock called Derek!

    You can't miss Hackney City Farm with it's huge, brightly painted sign outside! Kids will love meeting geese, turkeys, ducks, chickens, sheep, pigs, cows, rabbits, guinea pigs and a donkey. For foodies there is good value Italian cafe and deli with an outdoor summer terrace. All sorts of activities are on offer, including stone sculpture, music and movement and textile printing. If that's too much effort you can just come and relax in the charming garden.

    Freightliners City Farm offers a little slice of rural life in North London. Based in Islington, the farm has lots of different animals and an ornamental garden filled with flowers, plants and herbs. If you want to try out your green fingers, you can join in with the weekly gardening club on Wednesday afternoons. The farm grows fruit and vegetables for sale throughout the year. Five beehives also produce some very yummy honey which is also on sale.

    Kentish Town City Farm comprises of four and half acres of farmland nestled in the middle of dense, urban housing. A whole stock of farmyard and wild animals live on site including chickens, cows, ponies, pigs and sheep. Children can help feed, muck out and look after the animals and ride the ponies at weekends. The farm boasts a busy activity programme during school holidays and runs annual events, including May Day and Apple Day.

    Mudchute farm was created on a piece of derelict land left over from the construction of the Millwall Dock. It is now home to cows, pigs, ducks and Llamas! The Equestrian centre caters for all levels of riders and offers group and private lessons. You can pick up nature trail leaflets and the Muddie News (the farm's newsletter) at the shop. There's lots of green space which is also great for family walks and picnics. Mudchute is the largest urban farm in London.

    Hounslow Urban Farm specialises in rare breeds and has some unusual inhabitants. Alongside the pigs, cows and geese you will find alpacas and rheas chipmunks. Kids can come and watch feedings taking place at 3.30pm every day. The farm has a children's playground and picnic area and its own shop where you can buy the farm's free range eggs. You'll be excited by the pig racing which takes place every weekend and daily during school holidays!

    Surrey Docks Farm is set on the site of an 18th century shipyard and boasts an orchard, herb garden and vegetable plots. Continuing the healthy theme, the on-site Cafe serves up a range of nutrious treats. As well as the regular farmyard animals, look out for a group of bronze sculptured animals that can be found on the riverfront. Other highlights include a dairy, milking barn, bee room and a working blacksmith's forge.

    Belmont Children's Farm in Mill Hill is open every day, winter and summer, and is home to more than 30 animal varieties. As well as the usual farmyard favourites like chickens, sheep and pigs, Belmont has wallabies, alpacas and even quail! The cafe is equally fun, serving waffles with sweet and savoury toppings.
