San Diego - One Afternoon With A Rental Car

3 Jun 2007  Got the Travelin' Jones....
3.5 of 5 stars based on 1 vote

I was at a business conference with a free afternoon. Rented a car and went sight seeting with 4 collegues. We had a great time. Bring a jacket - it can be very cool.

If you only have one afternoon - do the Old Town Trolley. It is the BEST way to see the main San Diego sites for $30.00. But, if you have a 2nd afternoon - this is a fun way to see more.

We were gone from about 1:30 to 6:00. If I hadn't had other people with me, I would have kept going north to see Del Mar and Torrey Pines. Oh well, next time.

  • 1. Point Loma
    Point Loma, San Diego, California

First stop. Close and easy from downtown - maybe 15 minutes. Beautiful drive onto peninsula and then park and walk to old light house and Cabrillo National Monument. Entire area is NPS. Tidewaters was recommended, but we didn't have time.

  • 2. Mission Beach
    Mission Beach, San Diego, California

Second Stop. Exactly the California beach you've seen on TV. White sand, sun bathers everywhere, boardwalk with people blading, biking, and skate boarding. Would love to have spent the afternoon here people watching. Free parking by beach.

  • 3. La Jolla
    La Jolla, San Diego

Third Stop. Got a little lost on the way to LaJolla cove - but don't care. Drove through some AMAZING residential neighborhods. Wow. Ooh'd and Ahh'd over the houses, cars and landscaping. Head for the cove and park anywhere. Walk to the ocean and you should be able to go left or right and walk along a sidewalk that generally runs along a cliff - but also has stairs that lead to small, almost private beaches. Sea lions and surfers - plenty to watch from many vantage points. Again, could have sat on a bench or the grass for hours. Beautiful 70 degree weather with an ocean breeze.

  • 4. George's at the Cove
George's at the Cove, La Jolla, San Diego

Fourth Stop. This is a pricey treat - but there isn't a better seat in all of La Jolla. Take $25.00 and head to the outdoor seating on the top. Sit as close to the edge as you can (only plexiglass between you and a beautiful cliffside view of the sea). Order the fish tacos, a fabulous drink and the creme brulee. It's worth it. You won't want to leave.
