Stranded in Singapore - not for the nervous!

At this tim of year the rainy season is very nearly over in the tropics and Singapore is in full bloom. Why not spend 2 fabulous days in Terminal 2 on standby having missed your flight to Europe - I kid you not!! Changi Airport is an extremely friendly place once people get to know you, whcih they will if you miss your flight. I was using their wonderful free broadband to send a couple of e-mails and thought, well I suppose I ought to go to the gate. On route I stopped to make a quick call to my husband in Indonesia and he said - :"Why are you calling you should have taken off 10 minutes ago". I glanced at my watch and thought many superlatives whilst running to the gate for my London flight. It was still boarding but no way would they let me in. They have stopped announcing flights in Singapore or calling your name so there I was, luggage on the runway and all alone.
I was on standby for 3 flights that day but could not get on to any of them and finally got onto one the following evening. Having accepted the inevitable I managed to get a room in the airport hotel at 2.00am til' 7.00am - friendly.
Oh what to do??
Well I sussed out all the eateries and of course where you could smoke and drink - Paddies bar is great and you meet so many people from so many different countries - where else could you learn Mongolian in half an hour! The shopping is excellent - all duty free and a massive selection - I totally recomment Purple Gold for Jewellry and Ballet for shoes.
Phone calls are easy if you use the new Budget voice over internet service - I made about 20 overseas call for about s$20 - not bad. It is very easy to take the air transit skyway to terminal 1 for a bit of difference there are far more Asians in this terminal and the food is superb. When you are weary hit your hotel room and watch some satellite TV, or go to the Cinema for free and see the latest movies out! Or simply stay on line.
The staff are friendly and efficient - especially the night cleaners and they remember your name the following day along with where you are from and where your next port of call is.
So for a cheap, all inclusive weekend stay for one night and 2 full days you can't beat Changi Airport - all the fun of Singapore in one place!!!
