suggest iberostar resorts in playa del carmen or playa paraiso area where you can either kick back and relax or you can join in numerous activites. you pick your level of activity and go with it.

    Xel-Ha, Riviera Maya

great place to snorkle and feel safe doing so. not in the open waters of the sea but plenty of interesting things to see. suggest going early in am to avoid crowds and also to avoid murky water. entry into the inlet is via steps and safe and shallow. note it is important that, in order to save the ecosystem here, you should wear biodegradeable suntan lotion or none at all. it seems that regular lotion is not good for the coral or the sea life in this natural inlet.

  • 2. Playa del Carmen
    Playa del Carmen

the small city of playa del carmen is worth a visit while you are in the area. many shops and cafes and restaurants. the cabs in your hotel will take you to the main shopping area and there are always cabs to get you home, day and night. it has been our experience that this small town is well patroled with military police, so we always felt safe, both day and night.

  • 3. Coba
    Coba

a fascinating archiological site that is worth the entire day it takes to explore. We went with the Coba Jungle Safari and were well taken care of and received fantastic instruction on the Mayan civilization, both present day and ancient day. "Jorge", our guide was an archiology major (masters? i believe) and was an endless source of knowledge

  • 4. Cozumel
    Cozumel

while on the yucatan penninsula do take the ferry to cozumel, but note that on the other side when you disembark, you will be hounded by timeshare people so walk on by!!!! if you happen to be staying at an iberostar, you can set up a day pass to visit and use all of the services/ food/drink and so on at the sister iberostar on cozumel and that is worth every minute!! but make sure you get back to the ferry on time to get back to the mainland!!!! getting a taxi is a challenge and taxi to the iberostar on cozumel is at least $20 each way so be prepared!! if you are not visiting a hotel, check out the other attractions on the island, especially the snorkling and the diving. I believe that Cousteau felt that, short of the Barrier reef, Cozumel was the second best place to dive/snorkle in the world.
