Arriving at Udaipur

Cheap flights to Udaipur from Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur land at Dabok Airport, about 20 kilometres outside the city. The best plan for Udaipur flights is to find cheap airfares to one of these major cities, and then fly on Indian Airlines to Udaipur. Trains and buses also operate between Udaipur and the major cities, and some of these offer sleeper coaches to make the journey more comfortable. After Udaipur flights land, the only way for a traveller to go from the airport into the city is by a fixed-rate taxi. It's also important to have cash with you since the taxis don't accept credit cards and the Udaipur airport has no ATM.

Getting Around Udaipur

Once in the city, auto-rickshaw (tiny 3-wheeled vehicles) is a good choice to get around in. It's good to bargain with the drivers; they set their prices expecting that you will. Tongas, or horsecarts, are also available within the tourist areas, and are a practical transportation choice. Bicycles are available for rent in various parts of the city as well. Looking for another option for travel? Grab a taxi - there are several different taxi services available throughout Udaipur. If you really want a different view of Udaipur, remember to pack a comfortable pair of shoes for walking. Getting out and hoofing it is a perfect way to see the sights of the city!

Main Attractions in Udaipur

Cheap flights to Udaipur bring you to a jewel of a city in the ancient land of Rajasthan, featuring palaces, lakes, gardens and temples.  A breathtaking view of the whole city is available by taking the cable car ride up to the top of a high hill. The city palace of Udaipur is actually an entire complex of palaces, gardens and museums, all built with intricately-worked granite and marble. One of Asia's largest solar observatories is located on an island in Fateh Sagar Lake. The Jain Temple in Ranakpur is a very popular day trip or overnight excursion. It's an ornate temple full of carvings, set in a verdant wildlife sanctuary; there are overnight lodgings on the temple premises as well. Jain monks give tours of the temple and answer visitors' questions about Jainism.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife in Udaipur

Many different shopping environments exist in Udaipur, including shopping arcades and open bazaars filled with a dizzying array of goods: puppets, pottery, paintings, jewellery and much more. A more relaxed shopping atmosphere is available in the museum shop at the Rukmani Art Gallery and the Rajasthali Emporium, where the government has fixed prices on the handicrafts.

Udaipur is known for its spicy food, and some of the restaurants offer both excellent food and stunning views. The Lake Palace Restaurant and Jaiwana Haveli Rooftop Restaurant are two which are especially well-known, both looking out over Pichhola Lake. Nightclubs aren't part of Udaipur culture, but some of the large hotels have bars where you can have a drink and watch the sun set.
