Arriving in Bangkok

Cheap flights to Bangkok make it possible for tourists to visit the capital of Thailand with ease. With 11 million people calling it home, this city is the largest in the country. You can count on heavy road congestion, but there are beautiful sites that combine ultra-modern lifestyles with the most remote and historical of locations.

Two airports serve Bangkok. The Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports provide the best access to the city. Most airlines use the Suvarnabhumi Airport, except for Air Asia, Orient Thai and Nok Air, which use Don Muang airport for Bangkok flights. Both airports are about 30 kilometres from the downtown area of Bangkok. Suvarnabhumi Airport is an ultra-modern airport and is the busiest in Southeast Asia. It services both international and domestic flights. Direct, cheap flights from Europe and Asia readily come into both airports.

Getting Around Bangkok

The hardest part of your trip to Bangkok will be getting around. Traffic is heavy and it takes time to navigate the somewhat complex layout of roads. Bangkok flights land close enough to the city that you can use public transit once you arrive. You can take the BTS Skytrain as your main method for getting around. It covers the downtown area and Siam Square. There is also the Metro, or MRT, which will take you from the Hualamphong Train Station to Bang Sue Train Station. Though not as heavily used by tourists as the Skytrain, it is a good option nonetheless. You can also consider riding down the Chao Phraya River. This is the least expensive method and one of the most popular options for navigating the area. It's much like a bus, but it moves along the river. Metered taxis are another affordable option, as long as you don't let taxi drivers take advantage of you.

Main Attractions in Bangkok

You'll really appreciate the cheap airfares to Bangkok when you see how much there is to do in the area. The Island of Rattanakosin, or Old City, is perhaps the most important location to visit as many of the sites are here. This includes the Wat Arun, Wat Pho and the Grand Palace. You'll also want to visit the Emerald Buddha at the Wat Phra Kaew, the most sacred of the Buddhist temples in the country. Plan a visit to Jim Thompson's House, a CIA agent whose mansion has a Thai-style to it.

Be sure to visit Siam Square. Other attractions that are a must-see, especially for the first time visitor, include Suan Pakkad Palace, M.R. Kukrit's Heritage Home, The Queen's Gallery and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Lumphini Park, in Silom, is the largest park in the city and perfect for those who want to enjoy the outdoors.

Shopping, Dining and Night Life

With cheap tickets to Bangkok, you will have plenty of money left for shopping. Siam Square is the ideal destination for shoppers as it features dozens of small designer boutiques. You'll also want to visit the Chatuchak Weekend Market. For a more traditional experience, visit Yaowarat.

When it comes to food, there are hundreds of restaurants in the city, most of them with a Thai menu. You'll find international cuisine available widely. The best restaurants in the area are in Sukhumvit, though. Be sure to try the street food. It's authentic and spicy.

There's also a strong nightlife sc in Bangkok. Silom is the nightlife district in the city. Plan to spend some time on the open-air rooftop clubs and bars.
