    1. Bottom Line Up Front/frame of reference for my remarks. This was my first visit. I am a retired Marine Corps Infantry Officer, history buff and a tour guide aboard a museum ship; as such I have high expectations of military museums; I have visited over 30 in the United States. This large museum (be prepared to do quite a bit of walking) is professionally-curated on the highest level and contains a great deal of beautifully-restored vehicles.

    2. Background & Layout of museum. The museum was opened in August 2020 and was a $ 100 million project. It is approximately 160,000 square feet and contains approximately 500 jeeps, trucks, artillery pieces, armored vehicles, tanks, boats and aircraft. In the following paragraphs I have detailed the layout of the museum and listed some of my favorites and some that might be of interest to other visitors. The museum is separated into the following areas: Weapons Vault, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, outdoor exhibits. Many of the exhibits are contained in large, complex dioramas.

    3. Exhibit Area #1 - Weapons Vault. This area contains small arms (pistols, carbines, submachine guns, rifles) and crew-served weapons (machine-guns, anti-tank weapons; anti-aircraft weapons). This area contains many beautiful weapons (used by the U.S. and her allies, Germany, Japan and Russia; I have listed a couple of my favorites below.

3.a. M202 Multi-shot Portable Flame Weapon. In all of my museum visits, this is only the second one I have seen. It was employed in the 1970s/early 1980s. It replaced the World War II era flamethrowers and was eventually replaced by the Mk153 Shoulder-launched Multi-purpose Assault Weapon.

3.b. FGM-148 Javelin Anti-Armor Missile. Introduced in 1996 and still in use. This is a man-portable "fire and forget" anti-tank missile.

    4. Exhibit Area #2. World War II. This is the largest exhibit area; it contains: Jeeps, trucks, artillery pieces, halftracks and tanks (light, medium and heavy) from the U.S. and her allies, Germany, Japan and Russia.

4.a. Ford GPA Amphibious Jeep. Very interesting vehicle, similar to a miniature DUKW.

4.b. General Motors DUKW. Sea-going vehicle used to transport supplies from ships, across the beach and inland. It was created by marrying a six-wheel 2 1/2 ton transport truck with a boat hull.

4.c. Landing Craft, Vehicle & Personnel (LCVP) AKA "Higgins Boat". Shallow-draft boat used to transport troops and jeeps from ship to shore. Their drawback is that they could not make their way over reefs.

4.d. Landing Vehicle, Tracked AKA "Amtrak". This is a fully tracked vehicle used to transport troops, jeeps and small artillery pieces from ship to shore. Its tracks enable it to crawl over reefs, unlike the Higgins Boat.

4.e. Three jeeps key to the early development of the vehicle: Bantam BRC, Willys MB, Ford GP.

4.f. Large exhibit containing cargo trucks used by the "Red Ball Express".

    5. Exhibit Area #3. Korean War.

5.a. Studebaker M29 Weasel. This is a small fully-tracked cargo transport originally designed for arctic conditions.

5.b. Large full-size diorama depicting the fighting withdrawal from the Chosin Reservoir. It consists of: Jeep, reconnaissance car, truck in front of a backdrop of snow-covered mountains and blowing snow.

    6. Exhibit Area #4. Vietnam War.

6.a. M50 Ontos. Very small armored vehicle with six 106mm recoilless rifles.

6.b. Two M274 Mechanical Mules. Very small, moritized cart-like vehicle used to conduct resupply, lay communications wire; could also be used to mount recoilless rifles. Could best be described as a child's toy wagon with an attitude problem.

6.c. M561 "Gamma Goat". Very odd-looking six-wheel, 1 1/4 ton transport vehicle. It is articulated (separate cab and cargo trailer).

    7. Details of my visit

7.a. Date & Time. Friday 24 November 2023 (the day after Thanksgiving).

7.b. Other patrons. During my visit, there were approximately four groups of 2-4 adults.

7.c. Length of visit. I was at the museum for 3 hours. I read 50% of the informative placards.

    8. Location. I plugged the address in to my iPhone and it took me directly there.

    9. Access

9.a. Passenger vehicles. The parking lots can be accessed by any type of passenger vehicle. There are a great deal of parking spaces.

9.b. Buses and RVs. I consider the parking lot to be accessible to these vehicles; I recommend looking at the site on Bing or Google Maps to confirm. There was snow on the ground so I could not determine if there were any dedicated spaces for these vehicles. If this is a concern, I recommend arriving early to select a spot that can accommodate easy entry and departure.

9.c. Parking. No charge; the parking lot is very large and paved.

    10. Security. Visitors are not required to pass through a metal detector.

    11. Admission. Check the museum's website for current rates. There is a location beside the admission desk to make donations. Bear in mind the huge cost of obtaining, transporting and refurbishing these exhibits...not to mention how much it costs to heat and air condition this huge facility.

    12. Hours of operation. Check the museum’s website for current information.

    13. Handicap access. The museum is completely handicap-accessible. There are benches scattered throughout the museum. Motorized scooters are available.

    14. Child friendliness. I would consider that the museum is child-friendly but I did not see any hands-on exhibits

    15. Permissions/prohibitions

15.a. Weapons. I do not recall seeing any signs prohibiting knives or firearms; I recommend checking with the museum if this is a concern.

    15.b. Photography. Photography is permitted.

15.c. Pets and service animals. I do not recall seeing any signs but I would imagine that pets are not permitted but that legitimate service animals are permitted. I recommend checking with the museum to confirm/deny.

15.d. Bottled water is permitted in the exhibit halls.

    16. Type/nature of visit. Visitors may conduct un-guided tours; I do not know if guided tours are available.

    17. Amenities.

17.a. Climate control. The museum is heated/air conditioned.

17.b. Restrooms. Restrooms are available at the entrance.

17.c. Water fountains. Water fountains are located in the museum.

17.d. Food & beverages. There is a restaurant associated with the museum; they share a parking lot.

17.e. Gift shop. The museum has a small gift shop that has items oriented toward children and adults.

    18. Conclusion. I made a special trip from North Carolina just to visit this museum; it was well worth it! I made a four-day weekend out of it (see my other reviews of lodging and attractions in Jackson). Bear in mind that many restaurants in Jackson Hole are not open in the off-season (early Spring and early Winter).

We were driving through Dubois and saw the museum and decided to stop. We were there just after opening and were the only visitors. The staff member stopped what she was doing and did a mini tour with us, filling us in on the history of each of the exhibits as well as info on the big horn sheep in the area as well as near Jackson. She was so enthusiastic and friendly. It was a very enjoyable stop

Absolutely beautiful! Well worth the drive up the gravel road. We came up at sunset, right after a quick rainstorm and were treated to a rainbow and the most beautiful colors. We also saw an antelope that came up and snorted at us. Some of the best photos of our trip and that included Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

This is a must stop for pictures with the jackalopes and for snacks. They have a great specialty chocolate counter with good fresh high end chocolates. This was a fun and worthwhile stop in Dubois.

Lots of cool stuff but my favorite was the interactive sand pit where you can create mountains, valleys, water features and make it rain!

The scenery is outstanding! On a clear day, can see the Bighorns from the top of the Dubois Recreation trail. Crazy rock/dirt road, but we did it in a van. Looked for miles.

Short drive into the lake. Picnic tables restrooms and not a soul around. Lots of small fish to be caught and few big cruisers. Great place for a picnic lunch in the mountains.

Stopped here for a picnic lunch. There were plenty of tables available, but the restrooms were closed.

This lesser known monument is a real gem and the views from its location are incredible. It is dedicated to the men who made thousands of railroad ties in the mid 1800's. A quick stop on the highway well worth the stop.

Beautiful trail ride up the mountain and the lakes were something to see. Lake trout were right along the shoreline.

It is hard to choose a favorite experience but if you are an advanced rider you do have the opportunity to really ride! Try the “roller coaster” or “moonwalk.” They are very careful about safety and rides are geared towards individual ability. The horses are the best cared for of any ranch I’ve gone to and they don’t override them so they aren’t sour and seem to enjoy going out as much as their riders. I especially enjoyed the Arabians since I’m a lifelong quarter horse girl. My suggestions are if you are timid you might want to purchase a riding vest -Tipperary has a good one. Also they offer a laundry service so you can pack according. Other than that the food is fabulous, wranglers and owners are very nice and hands on. Also save a half a day to kick around in the little town of Dubois where they have some nice shops plus in the summer months they have a rodeo and square dancing. Overall a perfect week for us.
