This boxcar museum, east on Independencia just over the river, marks the spot where 18 men under the command of Che Guevara, equipped with rifles and grenades, captured a 22-car armored train containing 350 heavily armed Batista troops. Amazingly, this battle, which took place on December 29, 1958, only lasted 90 minutes. The bulldozer that the guerrillas used to cut the railway line is on a pedestal nearby.

"The Cubans know how to do a memorial that's for sure. The exterior sculpture of Che looking towards Havana from he crossroads of the revolution is amazing, but he interior mausoleum is beautiful, restrained and lovely. "
"Nice place. Mighty.
The museum inside was informative. Nice mixture of new and old. I liked the drafts for Fidels speach in 1997 which was abviusly written on some early Word version, with handwritten remarks on it.
The mausoleum you walk through quite fast. But it is nice to have seen it.
..."Sad thing is that it is far out of the city and Santa Clara seems to be quite sprwaled, in the american way. Without a car you probably need to know the bus time tables or take a taxi, which means a lot of bargaining.
Communications to Cienfuegos are quite OK. Highway most of the time, but for some reason out taxi driver passed a very small unpaved village on the way close to cienfuegos.
(I might add pictures later)

"You know how you visit certain museums and monuments that just demand a straight back and complete attention? This place was it. There are men in army green standing post around the museum, they are somewhat intimidating. We kept our cameras, purses and backpacks in the van while visiting the inside...". The first part of the museum was a memorial to Che and his compadres. The other side of the museum was filled with his personal belongings and plenty of photographs. It was very informative, although I understand a little Spanish, I was grateful that a lot of the information was also provided in English. A must if you are to understand the history of Cuba, if you are in Santa Clara.
