  "This mine was in operation from pre-Roman times til 1973. The mine was central to the history of Spain as the mercury it produced was used in the extraction of gold from ore. The mine's Cinnabar ore was also used by Romans, Chinese and Spanish artists to make the Roman Red, Chinese Red and Spanish R..."ed pigmants for painting, for tiles, and for laquerware. The whole history is captured in tactile exhibets, videos and other beutifully staged displays in an absolutely gorgeous modern museum...but that's not the high point. You also get a trip down into the mine and a tour from a former miner that lasts about an hour underground....absolutely amazing trip into history. We came all the way from the New Almaden mine, a namesake mercury mine (near silicon valley) in California on a sort of pilgimage to see the mine...but never expected such an amazing Park/site/tour.
