When we travelled from Caernarvon to Porthmadog in the afternoon there were no seats available in it. First class accommodation was very limited and my wife and I were lucky to be able to sit together without reserving seats. In theory the station only sells tickets for the available seats; but any 3rd class passenger can occupy a first-class place and pay the surcharge on the train, so buying tickets does not guarantee a seat.   "We loved our trip on the Ffestiniog steam train, the smell brought back childhood memories of long ago. We boarded at Minfford, took our seats in the old style carriage and the train began to trundle it's way to Blaenau Ffestiniog. It made several stops along the way to take on more passengers and ..."to stoke the engines. We were in the first carriage behind the engine so could watch as the coal was shovelled in, all adding to the experience. The climb was quite steep through beautiful countryside passing huge woodlands and a variety of colourful wild flowers and plants. We also passed several old abandoned though not derelict houses, probably those of railway workers or station masters. There is a buffet service on board but we didn't partake as we thought it rather expensive after paying over £20 for the fare. That said the journey was well worth the cost.
