The Ffestiniog Railway takes you on a 13½-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. We are recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest railway company in the world, being founded in 1832. We still build steam locomotives and carriages in our own workshops and the world's oldest steam engine, Palmerston, is still in regular use today - almost 150 years after it was built. Our historic trains climb over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round horseshoe bends (even a complete spiral) clinging to the side of the mountain or tunnelling through it. The Welsh Highland is Snowdonia’s newest railway. Trains start their spectacular 25 mile scenic journey from beneath the historic castle walls at Caernarfon. The trains - hauled by the world's most powerful narrow gauge steam locomotives - climb from sea level to over 650 feet on the foothills of Snowdon, before zig-zagging dramatically down the steep hillside to reach Beddgelert, nestling in the heart of the National Park, then through the magnificent Aberglaslyn Pass - voted the most beautiful spot in the UK by the National Trust - and on to Porthmadog.

Tom Gloster set up business as a potter 6 years ago, he is now very much established in his chosen career, selling his wares is shops all over the country, to places as far afield as Orkney in Scotland to the Isle of Wight. Tom specialises in contemporary kitchen ware. Myfanwy Griffiths, having graduated with a first class degree in Fashion and Textiles in 2008. set herself up in business as a textle designer, specialising in textile jewellery and home wares. Tom and Myfanwy metover 2 years ago, and have since exhibited at many shows together, and collaborated on several projects together. "Pethau Melys" is their new and exiting joint venture; selling teas and home made cakes and also a selection of local crafts, including their own, which has been made on site. Based in the old Harbour in Portmadoc, the shop has a very much vintage feel. Tea is served in vintage china, and the work is displayed on vintage french apple crates. All the furniture has been sourced from auctions, sales, and second-hand shops, it is then re-furbished, and available to purchase in the shop.

"We booked at the last minute for Fathers Day. Mark took us out for a hour and we had great fun...my husband loves anything extreme and loved it and both my boys aged 9 and 7 also had great fun...im a bit more sedate but it was also great for me too. Mark was fab with the kids and looked after them c..."hecking they were ok at all times...felt relaxed knowing he was there for them both. Will definitely go again and was worth the drive and the money we spent. Thanks

"Others have described the views – which are fantastic. So I'm just going to give some hints on how to get the best experience from your trip.
The number of trains is limited, so do check the timetable before arriving at the station. Trains in the late afternoon can get very crowded, so you may want..." to reserve seats if you plan the trip in advance – the only disadvantage to that being the risk of having bad weather.
The first class observation car gives fantastic views, but I'm not sure if this is available on all the trains. When we travelled from Caernarvon to Porthmadog in the afternoon there were no seats available in it. First class accommodation was very limited and my wife and I were lucky to be able to sit together without reserving seats. In theory the station only sells tickets for the available seats; but any 3rd class passenger can occupy a first-class place and pay the surcharge on the train, so buying tickets does not guarantee a seat. If the train is busy it might be wi...

"We loved our trip on the Ffestiniog steam train, the smell brought back childhood memories of long ago. We boarded at Minfford, took our seats in the old style carriage and the train began to trundle it's way to Blaenau Ffestiniog. It made several stops along the way to take on more passengers and ..."to stoke the engines. We were in the first carriage behind the engine so could watch as the coal was shovelled in, all adding to the experience. The climb was quite steep through beautiful countryside passing huge woodlands and a variety of colourful wild flowers and plants. We also passed several old abandoned though not derelict houses, probably those of railway workers or station masters. There is a buffet service on board but we didn't partake as we thought it rather expensive after paying over £20 for the fare. That said the journey was well worth the cost. When we arrived at Blaenau we alighted the train and took a walk around the 'town' which was pretty much closed down as are a lot o...
