"I am a little ashamed to say but I have lived in NM for a good number of years and had never been to Ft. Union, never even knew about it. Saw a program on TV about the largest fort West of the Mississippi, located just north of Santa Fe. Guess that means a little road trip.
I envisioned a small..." place, kind of an outpost before arriving into Santa Fe on the Santa Fe Trail. Well, I was totally wrong. The place is quite large and at its peak housed some 5000 people. The site was ignored by the govenment for years and it fell into disrepair. Finally, someone talked them into saving some of this Country's heritage and this Monument was created.
Walking around, you can still see remnants of the past both in the buildings, the old Santa Fe Trail and pieces of artillery used 150 years ago. We found spent shell casings and little cannon balls. "We arrived just at 400pm as they were closing and came back the next day to take photos, walk the paved pathway around the Fort and step back in time. The 10 minute NPS video is not to be missed, to learn about the history, as seen through th eyes of a widow-wife of one of the men that served there...." Her writings about her time there, living in family quarters and her return decades later in her late 80's to see the Fort in disrepair and shambles. She, through her writings, shared about its history. The film shared the challenge of locals and interested parties, to get the site, which was being razed and slowly disintegrating, protected by the National Park Service and held for all future generations to visit and enjoy.

"We enjoyed our visit here, walking around the ruins of the fort, learning more about the history of the area and the Santa Fe Trail. We saw the old trail and wagon wheel ruts in a few places."
