The station reopened in 1976 as a temporary exhibit of MTA New York City Transit to commemorate the US Bicentennial, and became a permanent museum due to widespread public support. The Museum closed in late 2001 for a 2 year renovation that resulted in new life safety systems, upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, and refurbished exhibits.
