Overlooking the Pecos River Valley, this fascinating park exhibits the varied plant and animal life of the arid Chihuahuan Desert region. Visitors can observe caged animals like snakes, lizards and birds of prey, plus larger animals such as bison and antelope, which are held in pens. Or walk along a nature trail past cacti, agaves, yuccas and other native plant life.

Once featured in "Ripley's Believe It or Not" as the river that crosses itself, this artificial channel brings Pecos River water from Lake Avalon to dry areas as part of the Carlsbad Irrigation System. Orginally made of wood, the Flume was destroyed by a flood in 1902 and then remade out of concrete.

"I use to live in Carlsbad and this was one of my favorite places to go. If you go to the top and hike for a bit there are some really nice spots to swim on the river, even a rope to jump into the water with. The only drawback is that there are leaches at the bottom of the falls so be careful. "
"Key is this not a regular zoo but has both vegetation & animals native only to the region. For $5 a great time for kids & adults & located high above the city so worth it just to see the views!
Took us 2 full hours to see it all. Very nice & if you visiting the area for the caverns, hiking, etc t..."his should be a stop to learn about the vegetation & wildlife in the area.
Is a loop trail so bring a bottle of water with you (they don't care what you bring in from outside).
Unexpected nice time!!

"We spent the morning at this nice little zoo and "gardens". The gardens consisted of a few different desert communities that you walk through. Being from Iowa, it was very interesting to us. We saw several lizards and a small snake (uncaged) while going through the garden areas.
The zoo isn't very..." big, and has just animals that are native to the desert. What I liked about the zoo is that the enclosures are very natural looking. Sometimes that makes it hard to spot the animals (we never did see the javelinas,), but makes it better for the animals. I much preferred seeing the bobcat and mountain lions with trees and rock ledges than just in small cages like at the Omaha zoo.
We got to see a fox climbing up in the trees in his cage; jumping from branch to branch. We also saw one of the mountain lions close up; he was right by the fence licking his paw. One of the javelinas has her own private enclosure since the other javelinas weren't very accepting of her. Her name is Lena, and the...
