I would definitely recommend going in the fall because the view from above is breathtaking! We stayed at one of the guest rooms for two nights. It feels like a motel room with all the amenities. If you do not want to camp or if it's too cold to camp, that is the way to go. The walls were a little thin so we could hear our neighbors.   "I read about via ferratas in the US Airways in-flight magazine. After a quick Google search, I found Nelson Rocks just two hours (70 miles through the mountains) from Massanutten Resort in Virginia making it a long, all day event to get there, do the via ferrata, and get back. I'm so glad we went...." The rocks themselves are an amazing geological feature that should be one of the wonders of the world. The welcome facility is new, clean, and comfortable. If you don't bring your own supples, they have them for sale there. (The actual equipment needed for the climb is provided.) Our group contained me (51 year old, 5' 2" female), my boyfriend (57 years old) and my boyfriend's son (16 years old, tall, lanky and very fit). Basically, you are linked into a cable system at all times and climbing on iron rungs through an extreme rock course. The course was challenging and a blast for all of us.
