Jefferson Center is a nonprofit organization that enriches and educates diverse Western Virginia communities by producing high quality performing arts programs, by providing long and short term rental space for community partners and individuals, and by providing educational outreach.Built in 1924, the Jefferson Center's historic facility originally served the community as Jefferson Senior High School. The high school was closed in the 70's and after sitting vacant for more than a decade, the Jefferson Center Foundation was formed to renovate the space into the beautiful arts venue that serves Roanoke and the surrounding region today. Jefferson Center offers world class concerts featuring a diverse array artists such as Wynton Marsalis, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Del McCoury, Esperanza Spalding, Rosanne Cash, Bobby McFerrin and so many more. Additional, Jefferson Center offers long term rental space to 20+ non-profits and locally owned businesses, as well as short term rental space for community meetings, weddings, celebrations and many other events.

"We're always looking for new places to take out-of-town visitors; it was a huge hit with my in-laws, and kept the interest of some children that we took there as well. Norfolk Southern remains an essential part of Roanoke's economy, and you can see some of the railroad history here. There are engi..."nes from different eras that you can walk through, historical information about the railroad, and plenty of model trains. The museum is only a short walk from downtown, accessible by car or foot (though I probably wouldn't walk here from Downtown after dark).

"I thought the venue was very good for the concert that I saw. I drove here just for the concert and stayed in a hotel across the street, so parking was not a problem for me. Didn't use the restroom, so I can't comment. It seemed to me that everything worked well. The staff was pleasant and answered ..."all questions. The sound was very good and I had a great time.

Science Museum of Western Virginia & Hopkins Planetarium
"Being from NY and now from Pittsburgh PA the Museum isn't that big but perfect for a day out with the Grandkids. Having family in Roanoke we go down once a month to see the Gandkids and it is always nice to have some place to go. The Science Museum is in the Center in the Square where they also have..." a farmers market, vendors and a food court in one of the buildings. It is perfect for taking small kids there because you don't have to spend all day to see everything, they didn't get tired out and we were able to get a good meal close by. I like the fact they kept it small, while we were there they had a Butterfly exhibit with over 200 butterflys you walked through also had a lot of interactive things for the kids to do, along with a room where they did live experiments.. Highly recommend to take the kids...
