Gibellina nuova is the biggest contemporary outdoor work of art in the world, with an extraordinary collection of works by important artists such as Carla Accardi who created the panels in ceramics Senza titolo - untitled (1987-1988), situated under the colonnade of the town hall, Nino Mustica, creator of a Fontana - Fountain, or Mimmo Rotella, creator of the Omaggio a Tommaso Campanella - Homage to Tommaso Campanella. The Fontana in travertine marble is by Andrea Cascella which, like all the sculptures along the roads in Gibellina, is a reference point from which to get one's bearings in the streets of the butterfly shaped urban layout of the town.

"Accessible through Villa Pepoli (a public garden), the very well kept museum is within a 13th century cloister adjacent to Basilica di Maria Santissima Annunziata.
Tickets are available on site up to one and half hours before closing time. Visitors are ushered through different halls under st..."rict supervision. A sign at the entrance reads that photography is not permitted, but eventually the guide let us use the camera without flash.
The museum houses an impressive collection of paintings by world renowned artists, marble sculptures, a splendid collection of gold and silver fine art objects decorated with coral, as well as memorabilia connected with the Trapani region. The latter comprises a guillotine which was used in Napoleonic times and a carriage.

"We went to Porto Palo with Think Sicily but stayed two nights in Trapani from where our charming hotel (Residence Porta delle Botteghelle) sent Aldo to collect us from the airport. The next day he took us to Erice. The day after he drove us to our very remote villa near Porto Palo (100 miles south)...." A week later he collected us and returned us to the airport via a couple of hours in Marsala.
At all times Aldo was a brilliant person to have around. Excellent english, sharp humour, intelligent, absolutely trustworthy, reliable, charming, a source of good recommendations and always entertaining. Very knowledgeable about the Island and its history, never a boor or boring. A two hour drive with a chatty driver is my idea of hell - a two hour drive with Aldo is a holiday in itself. Highly and unreservedly recommended.

"The frequency was good and the trips were short and quick. The cost between the ferry boat and the Hovercraft was minimal albeit that the ferry boat could accommodate many more people when the Hovercraft was full."
