Owner description: Todd & Patricia Brown are the proprietors of the Casa Grande Trading Post, Cerrillos Turquoise Mining Museum and Petting Zoo in the town of Cerrillos,...... more » Owner description: Todd & Patricia Brown are the proprietors of the Casa Grande Trading Post, Cerrillos Turquoise Mining Museum and Petting Zoo in the town of Cerrillos, 20 miles south of Santa Fe on Highway 14. It is one of the gems you will find while driving The Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway. They are at the west end of the small village, in a 29-room adobe hacienda that they built themselves. This is where they raised their family of six children and where their grandchildren can now visit. In the gift shop they sell jewelry they make themselves, much of it is made from the turquoise they get from their own turquoise mine near Cerrillos. The turquoise they get is a brilliant green which comes from the iron in the stone. They cut and polish the turquoise and set the stones in silver using techniques Todd learned when he first came to New Mexico in 1970. You can then venture into the Mining Museum. The admission is $2; there you will find a sprawling display where the Brown’s work to keep the history of the ancient mining district and the territorial mines alive with pictures, dioramas and artifacts. The items on display include glass bottles, insulators, mining photos & tools, minerals and unique finds that came out of an 1880’s Cerrillos outhouse dig.There are several friendly goats and a brown llama with beautiful long eyelashes that are in charge of the Petting Zoo, they along with a flurry of chickens, turkey and pigeons are live entertainment. There are bags with feed for sale inside the gift shop and both adults and families with children will enjoy taking pictures of the animals to add to their adventure on The Turquoise Trail. « less
