Hancock Shaker Village is a living history museum whose mission is to bring the Shaker story to life and preserve it for future generations. Called the "City of Peace" by the Shakers who lived here for 179 years until 1960, this community was the third of 19 major Shaker Villages located in New York, New England, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. There are 18 original historic buildings on this site. The staff and volunteers are dedicated to making the Village a center for reflection on living the principled life. The values that the Shakers embraced -- equality, pacifism, community, sustainability, responsible land stewardship, innovation, simplicity and quality in work -- resonate with us today. In addition to viewing the architecture, we have so many things to see including the farm and gardens, the animals, costumed interpreters, demonstrations of handicrafts like weaving, spinning, and blacksmithing, hiking and walking trails, the Discovery Room where kids can do hands-on activities, photo and art exhibitions, a cafe and picnic area. We have modern amenities and the village is handicapped accessible.

"The village is well run and plan on spending at least a few hours there to see all the buildings. The machine shop was extremely worthwhile as a staff member showed how they used hydro power to run items like a band saw and other carpentry tools. The round stone barn is huge and a staff member will ..."explain how it was built and the features that were incorporated in the design. You will get see many farm animals, vegetable and herb gardens, and learn about the shakers history. They have a café where they serve lunch on the property from 11 AM to 2PM. We had purchased a multi museum properties pass which is well worth it if you are staying a couple of days in the area.

"The Berkshire Museum is 4 floors of almost anything you would expect to find in a museum. The basement is an aquarium. Check the website if you have small children and you can visit during feeding time. The main floor has gems, animals, a dinosaur dig. Upstairs you will find special exhibits, co..."ntemporary art and classical art. Each piece has a sign explaining what you are viewing. Make sure to also visit the Discovery Area on the main floor for hands on activities and displays about the Berkshires. We love this museum because it has something of interest for everyone in our family. We just visited the new Exhibit Paperworks and thought it was interesting and well put together. Definitely a great family stop!

"We've visited Hancock Shaker Village several times over the last 5 years. The village has many buildings constructed by the Shakers. The architecture is simply beautiful and there are friendly interpreters inside each building to explain the design and function of the building and to answer any qu..."estions. The main brick dwelling quarters is a beautiful, simple, symmetrical building and not to be missed. There is also a barn with farm animals that children will enjoy and a school house that often has a school marm teaching lessons they way they would be taught 150 years ago! This makes the village great fun for children. There is also a Discovery center with baby chicks, and lots of hands on activities popular with kids under 12. There is quite a bit in the Discovery room for preschool children. If you like hiking, there is a marked trail that is about a mile long through the pretty woods near the village. Overall, you will do a fair amount of walking through the village. Ther...
